Memorial Day weekend in Maine?

Booked airfare to Boston early morning Thursday, flying out late Monday. That would give me almost five full days. Head up to Maine. Bar Harbour was the goal but not sure 5+ hour drive each way is worth it for a short trip.

the tentative plan would be head to Kennebunkport for Thurs-Fri, then to Portland Fri-Sat, then to Rockland Sat-Sun, then head back to Boston Monday morn. Spend the afternoon in Boston and fly out that night

any suggestions on where to go, to eat, etc

  • I’d post this on trip advisor in the forum section. I LOVE Maine, but Kennebunkport is too busy/crowded for me. I prefer Mid-Coast Maine. There are a lot of great places to eat in Old Port, Portland. In Boothbay, I’d recommend Bets Fish Fry (check hours) and Shannon Unshelled. Outside of Rockland, McLoons Lobster Shack. Camden is a neat little town too.

Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

  • If you’re into the outdoors at all, I’d suggest kayaking:

What are you planning on doing in Kennebunkport? The only thing there that isn’t better than what you’ll find further north is the beach, but in late May along the coast you’ll be lucky to break 70 in the afternoon and the water temp will be around 50.

Full disclosure, Acadia is probably my favorite place on earth, so I’d go there, even if it meant some extra driving.  Even if you don’t want to, you can easily fill another day in Portland or the mid-coast (Rockland/Rockport/Camden).

For food, Primo in Rockland is probably my favorite spot in the state.  Portland has a bunch of options, check out Duckfat, Fore, Central Provisions, Becky’s Diner.  Red’s in Wiscasset is justifiably famous - but it will be packed.

Allagash is obviously a fantastic brewery, but I really prefer Maine Beer Company, which is along Rt 1 in Freeport, just a little south of LL Bean’s flagship store.

I'd pass on Kennebunkport. Head up the coast to Wiscasset, Boothbay, Boothbay Hahbah, Damariscotta, Camden, Ellsworth and Acadia. Oh, and find some lobster rolls (Red's Eats in Wiscassett is supposed to be good, but I've never been there. I hear it's nearly $30 for a lobster roll though! Cash only as I understand it.).

If you're into LL Bean, that and every other outlet known to man is in Freeport. Bean is open 24x7 with free coffee and zero crowds after midnight. Or used to be anyway.

    Enjoy your trip!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Oh, and be prepared for mosquitoes and black flies at that time of year.
