They sweat when you use a lot of propane at once, if you are really cranking it out the tank will get a layer of ice on the outside

Here are some pics of the seasoning process.  Many thanks to @caliking for his guidance.

  • I sanded mine when I got it, not glass smooth but knocked a lot of the texture off. It works well

Ironically I just seasoned mine right before I read this.  Seems like it went well.  We'll see how it holds over winter, maybe sand in spring.

Just to help with the process of getting as flat of surface as possible.  More to the point, because @caliking told me to.

  • Haha. OK, so be it. I never even considered sanding mine and can't imagine how it would make it cook different.

"Cooking different" is defined as cooking on a slicker surface which means it won't stick as much plus the resulting desired maliard reaction means the meat will brown quicker and better resulting in a better taste and appearance.

Since the plate is a cold rolled surface, it should be smooth already. Only a very fine grit would do much to make it slicker. One you start cooking and scraping, the finish is going away.

The Blackstone products are great but they are far from high quality. But this puts them into an affordable price point. Their cold rolled cook top is no different. The surface on my 36" top was not a consistent smooth surface. Just sanding it with a good quality rough grade paper made a nice improvement.
My 22" travel size was much better out of the box. I also think trying to make it too smooth only makes it harder to season. Just my opinion.

I agree on the finish not being consistent. I have several sizes and all are different. The Camp Chef seems to be a better unit in my opinion. Most commercial griddles are hot rolled plate with a polish.

LOL.... All the styrofoam around it was impressive.  Purchased through Amazon due to the convenience.

@thetrim that's the nastiest lip cut I've ever seen

My seasoning might need a redo, but I’m making due.

Don't worry about redoing it. The best way to season it is to keep cooking on it.
