Ordered the new Kamado Joe wire mesh fiberglass gasket

  • Just an update, I did my first cook last night. Cooked planked salmon at 400. Not surprising, there was absolutely zero leaks all around, even around the temp probe wire...the gasket just conforms to whatever. And considering that when I assembled the bands I just threw it back together without spending any time adjusting anything, it's pretty impressive. The adjustment window now is so large that I don't think it matters anymore. There is gasket for days now, it will seal pretty much any gap however uneven the lid might be.

Will update this as I do more cooks at higher temp to see how it holds.

  • Wonder how it would do with the JoeTisserie and the Pizza Porta?  Too much gasket or would it conform ?

I have the JoeTisserie, Haven't tried it with new gasket, but there should be no issues, since the JoeTisserie is made for the KJ.

I can't imagine there would be a problem with the roto, since you can't have a good seal anyway. Any smoke just pours out the opening where the spit goes to the motor.

  • you can just stuff some plumbers putty in the hole.

    Hopefully this settles the dabate/speculation?
Was at my dealer yesterday and took this pic of popped up KJ
    gasket...

What I mistook previously as the felt component(base) of the wire mesh gasket is actually a separate felt liner sandwiched between the band and ceramics  :)

The replacement wire mesh gasket they're selling is also void of felt.

  • please come back every so often and let us know how it works. I got one of these for $19 when a cooking store was going out but wasn't sure if it would work.

Hey guys, just ordered this retrofit kit with the mesh gasket. It's designed for pre-2017 KJs and BGE grills. At less than $50 I figured it was worth a shot. I'll keep everyone posted one I get it.

  • I read there is no need to have this gasket on both top and bottom of the cooker.  Curious question!  What about putting it on the bottom after taking the old bottom gasket off and leaving the top felt gasket on?  How would that work?

Thought I'd update this...It's been a few months of low and slow brisket and butts, and hot as well steak and pizzas. The gaskets are holding up great. They got a little dark, but are still just as spongy and cush. I have zero leaks, and lid alignment issues are completely gone. Even with a huge underbite (which pisses me off by the way, but thats another story), there is so much gasket that it doesn't matter. It is the best upgrade you can make to this thing.
