OT - How do you take some heat out of hot jalapeños?
We have a great CSA nearby. Here was today’s haul: (what is in the red bowl is what is left from last week)
One of the items this week were jalapeño peppers. I like hot, but these things are super hot. I know deseeding and deveining them takes a lot of heat out, but even when doing that, they are HOT. At least too hot for me....
Anyone have any ideas on what to do with them or a method to take the heat down a notch or two? I am sure there is some trick out there that I do not know about.
Thanks in advance....

Hmmm, that is strange - jalenpoes are just one step up the Scoville heat scale from green bell peppers!
-
Try soaking them in water for about an hour after deseeding and deveining.They/Them

Cut them up and put them in a bowl of water. Change out the water periodically until the heat you want. I do that for people who don't like hot ABT's."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

If smoke them for 2 hours or so it will take some of the heat out.Large and Small BGECentral, IL

I haven’t tried but hear that a soak in sprite will remove all the heat.

Or, depending on your use, a quick dip in a boil. Obviously, vent the vapors and avoid the water.Maryland, 1 LBGE

Yeah, I don't really understand why, but even though most of the time jalapeños don't seem terribly hot to me, once in a while I get some that are really hot, too hot for me, really. I don't know why they vary like that sometimes.
Glad to read some of the suggestions people have offered! -
Some are hotter than others. When you clean then, cut out the white parts (ribs and seeds). That's where most of the heat is, you can tame them quite a bit that way. Give them a rinse as well after you clean them.

What KiterTodd said works. Made a bunch for my wife’s wine party, and they were very mild.

Everything said already....De vain and seed if doing poppers....I do poopers way ahead and serve @ room temp , always mellows then and you don’t burn your guests with molten cheese.....I’m a big ferment fan, this always mellows the heat.....or just ride it out the way they are

Deveining and seeding should take all the heat right out.
-
FWIW, those could be Serrano 🌶 or a cross pollination of sorts. Their shape is a bit narrow which leads me down this path.

Most of it will be fine, then you hit a bite with the "lucky seed", and it will take the top of your head off.Raleigh, NC

It won't help this time but next time look for some without lines on the outside. I find those are usually lower in the heat. The downside to me is jalapenos can almost taste like bell peppers when they lose the heat.
-
There are a few ways. Depends on what you want to do with them. I halve them and remove the seeds/pith for ABTs or other dishes. You can also soak them in water.Plymouth, MN

I'm thinking someone mixed up serrano peppers for jalapeño peppers. They look and taste a lot alike except for the heat.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
you could sweet pickle them
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
Sorry, they are not hot. they are one of the LEAST hottest peppers. Bell peppers rate a ZERO on the heat scale.
If you think they are scorching after de-seeding, you are either mistaken and they are not jalapenos, or you have some sensitivity that is unique.XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr. -

What I did discover was jalapenos CAN have as much as 2,500 to 8,000 on the Scoville Scale! With that said then there is quite a spread why some are hotter than others. -
