In my limited experience, the simpler the use of the wine the "better" the wine.
To use for making a simple pan sauce use a "better" wine. For use in a long simmering stew or the like a "lesser" wine should suffice.
Back in the day I use to drink (and like) this stuff so my advice may well be worth exactly what you paid for it. :)
    Riunite on ice, that's nice!

Used a 94 rated pinot noir tonight for my brisket chili.

    Called "B Side". $9.00.

Great wines are out there to enjoy, and enjoy cooking with.

    Bought a case.

Yellow tail is $14.00. Rated an 83.

    Your call.

Edit: shared the remaining 625ml with My Beautiful Wife.

    Great night. Opening another.

Sounds like we're on the same page, that a $9 bottle of wine can be perfectly fine to cook with.  Had no idea Yellow Tail was $14 a bottle now, that's crazy. Haven't purchased wine at a super market in years.

If you can find it in your area, and into wine, it is a very worthy purchase.
