what does the knowledge and experience needed to build it cost?
Not counting $12k in clamps... lol
I've never built one, but it's on my to-do list.  I've read and studied the process.  You don't need as many clamps if you use brads (you pull them out after the glue dries).

You can use any kind of wood.  Obviously you want something that will bend.  Cedar is very popular.  The wood can be soft or hard, it really doesn't matter, what makes it strong is the fiberglass sandwich surrounding the wood.

You can build a very light, very strong canoe or kayak with this method.

There's a router bit set you run all the wood through, it's similar to tongue and groove, but it's a half-round configuration so the angle can change based on the bulkhead forms.

Just saw all the new products from icast now my trigger finger is itchy... that new shimano SLX DC looks sweet, wouldn't mind the curado either. But if I had $500 extra I'd probably be going home with either a V3 waterfowl pro or a minimax!

im about 80 percent done with a 20 foot grand laker strip canoe, its not the wood that costs alot, its the beer that gets consumed during the journey.    lost my work spot, need to find a way to get it up to camp to finish it, some day.  staple gun is the way to go over brads.

went looking for pics, seems pbucket finally locked my account. ill see if i can get new ones. mines heavy but i built it that way, the back is a square stern of walnut heavy enough to support a 9.9 hp motor, front bow is a heavy laminate of ash, keel is oak. hull is red and white cedar with a diagonal checkered stripe down each side of walnut, white cedar, encased in redwood.  have the gunnels made but not installed and have not done the epoxy yet, thats the dilema i have right now, a dry non dusty place to do the epoxy and spar. where its sitting right now i may not even get a descent pic. im sure its a little dusty looking right now, its been a while.  its big, 20 feet and about 4 foot wide and i made it deep.  wish i had gotten the epoxy on it before moving it, thats when it pops and gives you the drive to finish it

Put me down for a scanoe.  Two coolers, camping gear, and a Johnson outboard... Or Go-devil if the weeds are insufferable and we're going upstream!
