I’ve never had an issue just using the standard ash tool in the first place.
I bought a KAC shortly after it was released. I like it. It may not be a “must have”, but it is a nice convenience.
I think my threshold for being inconvenienced must be quite a bit higher than lots of other people.  Because my routine is simply to stir the old lump with the tool once or twice, and then just use it again to pull out any ash that's all the way on the bottom.  It takes maybe 2 minutes.

Love mine.  Pulled some pork butts off this morning and had about a half basket full of lump left tonight.  Two shakes of the basket......I grabbed the can and chucked the ash over the deck.  Maybe 10 seconds and the that was it.  If you have more time and patience for the ash tool, go for it.  I'm glad I dropped the cash on this.

Thanks for the review. Excellent video. It's nice to see an actual video of how it's used.

The ash below may be a little deceiving. I bet if you shook the basket outside the egg it would reduce some of the ash below. It also looks like a lot of the ash missed the can from you brushing the walls of the firebox. I wonder if you brush away from the opening of the can it might help reduce the cleaning below? Just an observation when watching the video.

Thanks again. I'm going to look into getting one after watching your video. Thanks.

I have a basket, though not KA . Is there an appreciable difference in te baskets? I am strongly considering the Can. Thanks for the video, @EggerPalmerATL.

Those are great points. I'm looking into getting a galvanized trash can like Ron posted to shake the basket into to limit the amount of ash falling into the can. I am also going to try to avoid brushing the ash into the open area in the future.

I'm glad you found the video informative and are planning to make a purchase. I'm pretty sure there is a Father's Day sale going on right now too!

You are welcome. I haven't held, seen up close, or used any of the other knock off baskets. I do know I didn't have a single issue with my original one that I used for 4 years. The welds all held up perfectly. The newer basket is high quality stainless steel and I doubt many of the knockoffs are due to their low prices. All stainless steel is not created equal. I think there is something to be said for purchasing from the original designer and someone who continues to create new, great products.

I can't agree more. I know I shouldn't be, but I'm usually in a rush to get my egg lit. I know the quicker I get it lit, the quicker I can get the meat on. I'm fine waiting while the meat cooks because it can't be rushed but you can definitely rush the prep and lighting.
  • I just heard from Chad at KAB after he watched my review video. He suggested using the brush I used to knock the ash down into the can to also sweep the "dam" of ashes back into the can before lifting it out. He said he wears his nitrile coated gloves when emptying and reloading his egg so he just uses his fingers.

That's what I do.......just reach down in there and give it a sweep around inside of the fire box with my hand.  You can either push the ash between the can and door back into the can, or hold the can outside of the draft door and use the ash tool to grab that last little bit.

It doesn't need to be spotless in there.

You are welcome. It seems to be a hit with everyone who has purchased one. Take advantage of their Father's Day sale.

I agree it's probably a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. It isn't needed, and the Egg still functions just fine without it. I still bought a Can for my Egg last night, along with a Kick Ash Basket for my KJ Jr.  Whether it's needed or not, it makes clean up easier, and honestly, I can tell a difference in time to get the Egg up to temp with the KAB.  Anything that saves me time and keeps things cleaner is a win in my book. The Father's Day sale made it an easier purchase, so I just bought the basket for my smaller KJ and the Can for my Egg.  I"m very happy with the KAB so far.

I feel the same way. Ash isn't a "problem" but its something that we have to take time to clear. We pay for convenience in all areas of our lives. There is a reason services like InstaCart, GrubHub, and UberEats exist. Unlike those services, the Kick Ash Basket and Can are once in a lifetime purchases with a great return(convenience) on investment in my opinion.

The can works makes cleaning easier. I’m a fool for gadgets especially from reputable company like KickAsh.

To save even more time, I am considering at least a temporary peace out from the forum.  The time I save by skipping the forum for a month would cover all activities related to loading, lighting and cleaning out the lump for over a year!
    Love you bro!

Are you selling any of those TightWadDIY t-shirts by any chance?  I feel like one of those would also be a once in a lifetime purchase.

I'm planning to make a few with a redesigned logo. I hope to have some in about 3 weeks. I will let you know.

Probably because on mobile it is incredibly easy to hit the "flag" button when trying to hit "like". I doubt that anyone intentionally flagged it. At least I hope not.
