It's because it's so coarse.. if it gets THAT bad remove it and clean it. I use an old toothbrush to wipe it off occasionally...Dallas Texas.

@Wolfpack I did that but still have problems with closing them.

i traveled with some that wouldnt close, i just scotch taped them shut and it was fine, if your concerned you can do that.

I haven't had that issue with the bottles. Sometimes I save rub bottles when empty for use with homemade stuff.
