EPA hooked y'all up.  And now manufacturers must heed and produce only hydrocarbons and propane type refrigerants.  Lots of equipment has r290a, r600a, r600, r170......

Personally I hate it but, no choice in the matter.  This is both commercial and residential.  So yes a cooler or freezer could be right next to a live fire grill or fryer.

We had a working chest freezer in our garage, and replaced it with a upright model which we love so much more. I did not like the chest for the reasons already stated (things get buried on it, and put on top of it.) I did not know how much I disliked it until we got the upright. Wayyyyyy easier to organize for us. I forget which kind it is - I think Frigidaire.

I have a frigidaire chest 7ft and its about 10 years old, still works like a champ. Also have a frigidaire 18ft upright chest freezer, it's also awesome. I need to eat more deer meat to clear them out.

And two, the chest freezer itself gets buried under stuff.  Anytime there is a flat horizontal surface, it tends to invite the stacking of crap on top of it.
I'm betting that's what killed one of Apple's computer models, was cube-shaped and had the exit cooling vents on top.  Dumb!

Guys...I just retired after 40+ years as the Electric Meter Manager for a large electric/gas utility.  We love people that purchase self defrosting freezers!  Your electric usage is double what a chest type would be!  The only thing better was customers in cold climates that had a hot tub (and teenagers with friends)!
We also gave away electric water heaters (free no charge) to customers that didn’t understand that gas models ran much cheaper!
  • Given the current climate and the rash of thread mowings, it was mighty brave of you to feature “best chest” in your title.

I have an upright. Easier to find stuff. As far as which brand to get, find a local place that "includes" a warranty and does their own service. This day in age you are going to need to cash in on that warranty.
