Only 76. I would have guessed 86. Too bad.
  • Loved the guy, always enjoyed his part in cutting promos with the wrestlers!  Pretty much grew up with Mean Gene and Hogan..

  • Yea,  I grew up in MN with him and the AWA.  He was better than most of the wresters and sure knew how to get a promo out of them.  I heard he spent a ton of time teaching Hogan to do a good promo, many other guys too.

I actually met him a couple of times, he would come into the car wash I worked at.  Always a super nice guy who tipped big and drove the nice luxury cars.

The amazing part to me is that he was a tall guy himself, like 6'2" at least but he looked like a midget on TV compared to those guys.

Thanks for the memories Mean Gene...

Not trying to be argumentative at all, but I have met him several times in person. I use to take my kids to see wrestling all the time. With that said, im an even 6 foot and I was several inches taller than him. We got to be talking about a different person.

I was barley in high school, maybe I was short then :)

Time can do odd things to memories.  We all talked about it when he came through.

    I defer to yours

  • You are correct, google says he was 5'8".  I was either a midget then or just in awe....

I knew that I was at a minimum 3 inches taller than him. Wasn’t sure of his actual height though.

Apparently Verne Gagne asked Gene last minute to fill in for another broadcaster. He told Verne that he knew nothing about wrestling. Verne said, "Do you own a suit?" The rest is history.

I still to this day have no idea why professional wrestling is a thing.

It’s crazy to learn about those guys now. My brothers and I would thrash the crap out of each other on a Saturday morning after watching wwf.

There was a good documentary on Netflix called the “the resurrection of jake the snake” also a good/sad one on hbo about aundre the giant.

Joe Rogan podcast interviewed jake the snake and diamond Dallas that I have listened to.

Whatever you think about wrestling it is interesting to hear about these guys and what they went through the wrestling was fake but the abuse to their bodies was not.

I understand your point @DMW but I remember watching wwf as a kid, then jumping off the back of the couch to body slam my bro. Good times

  • Because fairy dust and unicorns exist, for christ sakes I wish I was Vince MicMahan ... Yeah this is all B.S. so go along with it and by the way, spend $150 for ringside tickets to take your 7 year old boy to see it.. been there done that. Btw.... we both had a good time :) I guess that's what makes this place such a great place to live...

I have it on good authority from several personal, contacts that the business ages everyone quickly. Mean Gene, Jim Ross, and all the wrestlers.

Sad had to see him gone much too soon.

RIP.  Sad to hear of his and Super Dave's passing.
