super off topic from BGE but I have a feeling we have some outdoors people here. My brother is planning to hike the Appalachian trial starting in March/April and I want to get him something for a Christmas that would be useful. Anyone ever hiked it and looked back like “I wish I had___”?

A Spot locator and an extra water bladder / purification kit

That was the most miserable 2 days I experienced trying to prep for elevation changes before a trip.
Tight trails...big pissed off rattlers ...uneasy access to water.
    No thanks never again

Get him a good water filter or some of the Appalachian trail pocket guides. The pocket guides are pretty lightweight and a great resource for finding water and cool spots along the trail.  The other thing I wouldn't go without would be my crank flashlight/radio. It was nice to crank the thing up at night and listen to some music or a game.

    A portable cell phone charger
  • The above water filter/purifier is a must, good socks, nice sleeping pad, a lot of the shelters are just poles with wire mesh for support. A good stove, I have a MSR stove that still burns most anything after 35 years, good binoculars.
LBGE, and just enough knowledge and gadgets to be dangerous .

  • Get him a bottle of iodine tablets and a nalgene. We never use water filters on the trial.

My suggestion to you would buy him a copy of bill brysons “walk in the woods,” - a true story of someone trying to conquer the AT. It’ll be motivational, inspirational, and throw him a smile when his feet and back hurt.

    Happy trails, thru hiker!
