Fed up with the Fed?

Hopefully we can get some insight from some on here without devolving into political shirt shoveling. I found it interesting without really knowing the implications.

Yeah just take a look at the front page of the forum - something like half of the threads are political.  Oh... wait a minute...

In fairness to the OP, I think he was actually trying to launch a conversation on how the Fed works without making it political at all.  I know that's a stretch coming from him, but in principle a discussion on the Fed doesn't have to devolve into political sh!t-posting.  But.... carry on.

Sorry 2xegger feels that way. There is only one overtly political thread on the 1st page of either the EggHead or OffTopic forums. A Christmas poem to Trump. I guessed he missed that one because he didn't complain about it.

I thought the Fed was wrong during the last administration by keeping interest rates SO low.

You did miss it. I said it was going to go over like a turd in the punch bowl. Which it did and should have. Carry on.

I participate in a biweekly political discussion group called The Coffee Party (we meet at an Ogden coffee shop).  One of the members is a retired Economics professor, think I'm gonna run this article past him, see if he can clarify it for me (economics has always been confusing to me).  Thanks for posting it.

Thanks. The Fed is a mystery to a lot of people. It is supposed to be free of politics. The article was certainly apolitical.

i believe they intentionally make it a mystery because they dont know what they are doing.  sometimes they get lucky, sometimes it all comes crashing down.

  • The Fed raised rates 3 times this year (and plan the 4th next week), which is why many 62+ year old people with lump sum pensions are cashing out in 2018. It didn’t take much math for me to cash out my lump sum and reinvest it in 2019.  Many lump sums will take the hit in 2019 and 2020 as they raise the rates going forward.  It’s the “nature of the beast”, and we got spoiled with the low rates!

    Honestly, fish, we don't know.

Economics is one of those sciences that has more uncertainty than most.  I would point out Issac Asimov wrote some science fiction on something analogous called the Foundation Series:  (from wiki)

The premise of the series is that the mathematician Hari Seldon spent his life developing a branch of mathematics known as psychohistory, a concept of mathematical sociology. Using the laws of mass action, it can predict the future, but only on a large scale.

We know what we know based on history and the analytics leading up to any given trend in economic success.  What is scary, right now, is Trump is trying to influence the Feds in a contrarian way to the known science to bolster economic performance at the expense of long term stability.  That, my sea-named friend, is a fact.

I'm not sure an article about the Federal Reserve that doesn't contain a single mention of the Trilateral Commission, New World Order, Agenda 21, Rothschild's, etc. can really be taken seriously.
More importantly - is PM May staying or going? We'll know in just a few minutes. I've got a tenner on her staying.

Sarge loves to try and stir things up, not so much in the kitchen though.  If he put the effort of stirring the pot into a cooking post, he'd be legit.

    I'll repeat, @The_Buffalo sink this!

Serious question - what is is that bothers you so much about a political thread but not a Peloton thread, or a Netflix thread, or a Chik Fil A thread, or a "which smart calendar should I use" thread or any of the dozens of other off topic threads that have zero to do with using a BGE?
