Q39, Joe's and Meshuggah's is a good trio. I've not been to You Say Tomato, but I'll have to give it a try.
If you didn't try the Z-Man, you'll have to come back and try it.
Glad everything went well. We even had nice weather for you!L, M - Kansas City -

Glad everything went well. We even had nice weather for you!I was real tempted to get a Z-Man sandwich based on the reviews here... but, first time in a BBQ place I really like to see how the meat stands on it's own, not covered with cheese, bread, sauce, onion rings, etc. I was bummed they didn't have any burnt ends when we were there. I was curious if Q39's were an anomaly (they were better than any brisket I've been served) or standard KC quality tenderness.Yes, the weather was crisp in the morning but was nice during the day. We had a great visit to KC and Lawrence and hope to visit both again.I liked the smoke flavor of Joe's meat. Any idea what kind of wood they use? I forgot to ask. They also have a great sauce selection to take home and the gallon prices for home use were fantastic! They had standard size bottles for $8.50 but then you could get a full gallon for $12! Solid. Didn't buy, but you must be a good partner to pair up with in the Sauce & Rub exchange!LBGE/Maryland -
Returning from a trip to KC and experienced Q39 as suggested by several on here. It was good, but everything was covered in tons of sauce. I much prefer Texas style where they let the meat speak for itself.
It's hard to tell what was cooked well vs a sub-par cooked covered up.
Ribs and wings at Q39 were good, but other meats are hands down better in TX (IMHO)Milton, GA

I live in KC and I never tried the original Joe's until this past summer. They have a newer location close to my house and that was always good enough. I didn't think it could be that much better at the gas station... boy was I wrong. Eating there is a religious experience.Kansas City, KansasSecond hand Medium BGE, Second hand Black Kamado Joe Classic, Second hand Weber Kettle, Second hand Weber Smokey Mountain
