Oranges (OT)
How does one find a good Orange ? I'm talking about the fruit. I love eating oranges but have only eaten a few in years, the quality is terrible, either the bag gets thrown out or returned. Just garbage out there now.
Oranges now seem unnecessary hard to peal, the pulp is very thick, and cannot separate the pieces without making a mess and falling apart. Maybe my old teeth, but I find them hard to chew.
I used to only buy Sunkist, but cannot seem to find that anywhere anymore, even tried Amazon.
Maybe it's the punishment for living in Canada

We always look forward to Cara Cara oranges which start arriving in mid November. They are a pink fleshed Navel variety which started in South America and is now grown also in California. We also like many of the Florida varieties - we are lucky that a local farmer gets truckloads of citrus fruit from Florida all Winter and they are usually very good. Looking forward to his first shipment and day now.Large BGE

We usually have a citrus truck come up several times during the winter. I want to say it's Indian River, anyways the always seem to have decent quality. I'm anxious to try this years crop~ John - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

Even the Clementines are hit or miss. We have a bag at the house right now and some will be the best I've tasted then the next will be terrible.....from the same bag.
Funny you posted this. My wife and I were having this same conversation yesterday.
My girls just sold fruit for softball.....by the box. Now THAT stuff is all good. I need to find where it is sourced from. Worth the money!

I'm confused on Cara Cara oranges, Google says it's some kind of mutation with naval oranges ... Then again that probably is the case for everything, mutated.Dave

Does anyone know if Sunkist still makes oranges, I think they are from California.Dave

Ironically, I've noticed the last two Thursdays, my phò (Thursday is Phò Day) that my slice of lime was so dry, I couldn't squeeze any juice out of it into my soup!
Don't normally buy oranges, so no input there.___________"When small men begin to cast big shadows, it means that the sun is about to set."

The issue with oranges such as "Cuties" and the various other trendy advertised brands are they are just that, brands, not varieties. The actual variety being sold under the brand name varies throughout the growing season. This accounts for the large variation in fruit quality. If you wait a little longer into the season, there is a variety sold under the name "Sumo" that is very good, it is exceptionally sweet. It is hard to find in the stores. I have had luck finding them at Whole Foods in December. They are pricey. I walked out of Whole Foods with a $30 bag. The Sumo orange is also known as Dekopon. The Dekopon, is a Japanese hybrid of mandarin and orange. Also, any of the Satsumas are very good and they are easy to peel.

I grew up in Orlando in the 50's. Back then orange groves were "open" and we shot doves in them. Fun shooting, or trying to shoot them, as they flew between the rows. Kind of a poor man's skeet. Problem was too many complaints of people biting into a juicy Florida orange and getting a pellet of #8 bird shot. A good thing just didn't last!

Then again that probably is the case for everything, mutated. Many new varieties used to come from a mutation of a regular variety. This has always been true for Apples. Cara Caras supposedly came from this type of occurrence. These days, scientists cross breed varieties they think will produce interesting fruit and then propagate them. There is also a lot of genetic modification, but that has nothing to do with Cara Caras.Give them a try if you can find them in your area. The problem with co-ops like Sunkist is that they have a number of farms supplying them with produce and you may have mixed results.Large BGE
