Howdy!

I'm seeking someone out there who has the new cast iron BGE cap (the one where they got rid of the "daisy" and that accepts the rain blocker), who would be willing to take a couple of measurements of it for me..

I'm trying to decide if I want one. ;-)

Please PM or email me if you're out there and find this message!

Kind regards,
Eric

I was going to get one but the price of both pieces after just spending a bunch on some EGGcessories and a few other BBQ and cooking toys. Just got my EGG seven months ago, ( I want to get temp control, DiGiQ ? I see BGE has one now any opinions anyone ?) so save some $$ and my friend, his son and I made one today.  :)

For the price is the rEGGulator worth it? And another $60 bucks for the rain cap ? Was merely commenting that I think saving $$ right now since i just spent a bunch on BBQ stuff the daisy wheel and my homemade rain cap will be fine. I'll spend on the temp control first, any opinion on the  Egg Genius or the DiGiQ ?

I believe the price of the Reggulator and rain cap combo is about $80 not just $60 for the rain cap itself.

So I think the question is whether or not it’s worth it to buy it instead of the dfmt, and the answer is easily a yes. I wanted to simplify, it replaces the dfmt, and the ceramic cap. You control the temp with one motion, not a combination of the petals and the larger opening. It also doesn’t change position if you forget to use it properly like the dfmt. I don’t know what the dfmt cost,  but my guess is probably $50, just like what i paid for the reggulator. The dfmt doesn’t have rain protection either, so I’m glad I wasn’t forced to pay for it if I didn’t want it. Rain is a rarity here in the desert of Utah, so I didn’t need the rain umbrella. It also seals shut tightly. Its really well designed, and I actually think they out engineered kamado Joe here. The kontrol tower from kamado Joe has grease issues, and it’s painted so many people are complaining about the paint coming off. So if you’re someone that likes to upgrade, its very cool and worth it in my opinion. If your dfmt works fine, no need to upgrade. I bought one to try it, and I like it so much, I’m going to buy three more for my eggs that it fits on. For some people, they won’t be able to justify the price to replace something that already works, and that’s reasonable.

On the digiq vs egg genius, I can’t answer that. I have an auber WiFi unit that works really well. I also have pit master iq 110 from several years ago that works good, just no app or WiFi like the auber.

    What measurements do you want?

Thanks fort the input on the rEGGulator, how does it keep it's position without sliding if you open the EGG ? I think I'm going to go with the DiGiQ DX3 and order the extra adaptor for the Weber Smokey Mountain for an extra $20 Don't really need app or WiFi in a temp controller . Up here in Western NY state rain and snow common so really like to have a cap, and I think for now the DIY version we have made will do the job perfectly, maybe if( when) I get another egg the new cap is standard with it.

What they are charging for these compared to the cost of the Smokeware cap is criminal if you ask me.

It doesn't move at all with whatever position it is set at.  They have some sort of magical voodoo in it where it stays in whatever position you choose.

I dont see that.  It comes with every egg, so it doesnt seem criminal.  Now if you feel the daisy wheel doesnt work for you because of an older egg, the extra 5 dollars over a smokeware doesnt seem excessive.  I paid $45 for my smokeware shipped to my door, and I paid $50 at my dealer for the new BGE cap.  The smokeware seems cheap compared to this, having now used both.  I am sure others that have used both as a comparison might have different opinions, but that is my experience.

My EGG is only 7 months old, so not an older EGG and it came with Daisy wheel (?) and yes if $5 more that isn't bad, I looked at the smokeware as well but I'm digging the DIY design =)

I was talking about purchasing them for folks who have the older DFMTs.

The cost of the new cap plus the rain shield compared to a Smokeware is kind of nuts if you ask me.  If the rain shield were included with the new cap and it was only $5 more than a Smokeware, I wouldn't complain.  But it isn't.

I actually walked into our local Ace looking to buy these.  But they were also selling the Smokewares.  I asked the dealer why I should pay so much more for what BGE was slinging vs a Smokeware, and he really couldn't justify it either.  It was an easy call for me.

I don't recall exactly, I just know that the total came out to close to twice what the Smokeware was selling for.

For sure the ceramic and all is heftier than the Smokeware.  But heft isn't really necessary there.   All you're really looking for there is a means to control air flow and keep the rain out.  Why anyone would pay more than the Smokeware for that basic functionality, when the Smokeware does both fairly elegantly and efficiently, is beyond me.  But then nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American consumer, so what do I know?

How can it void warranty? Its the cast iron cap with a piece attached to it ? That doesn't have anything to do with the EGG and if that was true the Smokeware cap is a "Mod" and not an authorized product so would that void the warranty?

Using the Smokeware cap on my medium, I had to also purchase the flat cap that fits inside of it to snuff the fire.  But, that was my issue to be fair...my brother-in-law that gifted me his old egg had broken the ceramic cap long ago.  The flat cap (plug) that fits the Smokeware was cheaper than a new ceramic cap.

I am probably going to get one of the new caps from BGE eventually. The reason is purely aesthetic for me. That smokeware cap is butt ugly and completely clashes with aesthetics of the egg in my opinion. Maybe if they had it in matte black finish I would consider it but the design is still terrible looking.

Here is where I saw it (below) and got price. haven't been to a dealer in my area that has one but haven't been in a few months, maybe they are cheaper at the ACE hardware, other dealer close to me never seems to have a lot of accessories and always have to order and they screwed me on my last purchase and it took over 2 weeks when they said a week so I don't really want to go back to them and it's the second time they did something similar. If I can get it for the price you posted I'd consider it for sure  Green Egg rEGGulator Top - M, L, XL, 2XL$105.86Amazon.comFree shipping

Because its BGE charging for it. I want to know exactly what scenarios its even needed. If you are cooking a low and slow that cap will probably only be opened at most 1/4". If you happen to have your egg uncovered on a patio is there really a likelihood that its going to get enough rain in it to do anything to not only your rub but the temp of the egg? I doubt that. If you are cooking with that cap on but wide open in a monsoon maybe, just maybe you could have issues. But if that is your typical cooking environment my guess is you would be willing to pay the $27.95 for it.
