  • My grandmother passed away on 9/9/01.  I got up that morning to get my wife and I a chicken biscuit from Chic-Fil-A before picking up my suit and heading to Kentucky.  I thought the local Atlanta shock jocks were doing another one of their stupid bits.  Got back home and turned on the TV to see the second plane hit.  Got to the tailor's shop to see the first and second towers fall.

Eerie driving from south of Atlanta to Kentucky without a plane in the sky.  Noting from Hartsfield, nothing from Dobbins or Chattanooga.  Nothing from Nashville.  Nothing even coming out of Ft. Campbell.  During the drive, all the rumors of gas shortages were starting, too.  I know my truck could make it up there on a tank, but I know I stopped on Mont Eagle, in Nashville, and Hopkinsville and filled up.  My uncle, a Vietnam vet, made sure I had enough Jerry Cans of gas to make it home from his farm tanks......

I've been through plenty of hurricanes, including riding out one in a horror hospital in New Orleans during Katrina. Had my house broken in to.  Water damage.  The general consensus with folks I run with is light humor is healthy, especially *before* the event.

I would suggest visiting a hospital to have the stick removed out of your ass, for chrissakes.

I was packing to take a flight to Seattle.  Needless to say it was cancelled and I was glued to the news.  We got our flights rescheduled as soon as they opened up the skies.  The whole atmosphere at the airport and in the planes was weird.

No matter your politics, it was a $hity day for the USA. Not only the people we lost that day, but for the many who we have lost and have suffered since.

I see what you did there.

  •  I will never forget the silence in the Memphis sky in the days afterward.

I know this is a common observation.

In our town, FedEx planes are constantly above.  They come and go in every direction all the time, but mostly at night. You get used to it and don’t really pay attention.  But when that whining sound of jet engines from afar wasn’t there ... it was a terrifying silence.

I suspect Louisville was similar, with their UPS air hub.

That hum in the sky has become a security blanket letting us know all is well.

    God bless this country.
