Saw this on the FB selling thing and for a split second thought.....

I have not seen one of those in years. I am curious if they are still even made?

I have seen some similar being used as decorative for patios, made from other materials, but not those.

For $20.00, I would consider buying that.

    Cool find.

I remember smelling those things as they burned; wouldn't want my food anywhere near one!
@SaintJohnsEgger, they are torches formerly used around construction areas (and stalled vehicles? can't remember); you can see the wick in the top guard.

  • Well since the statute of limitations has expired, I will admit something. As a middle schooler I was dumb enough to tell a stoner how to make gunpowder. He didn't tell me that he had swiped one of these from a utility company and proceeded to stuff it with gunpowder and a fuse. Fortunately he was swift enough to set it off in a gravel pit and to hide behind something to block shrapnel.

OK. I remember those things. I couldn't tell how big it was from the photo. The scale had me confused as it looked bigger.

It's a smudge pot. They were used on road construction sites similar to how reflective construction barrels are used today.

They were 8" in diameter and burned kerosene. When filled fully, they could burn for almost 24 hours but were mostly used at night only. The smoke smelled terrible.

Yes, and preceded the yellow flashing lights on barricades.  They went out of use just prior to the time rotary dial telephones did.  You have to be well seasoned to have seen any in use.

I'm not well seasoned, OK maybe a little bit.

These we're widely used in rural southern Indiana up to the early seventies. I worked road construction there during the hot, muggy summers to help pay for college.

BTW - there were rotary phones but only party lines.  ;)

  • I'll admit to reappropriating them and using in the back yard with anti bug lamp oil. They last quite a while but seems like my last ones finally rusted out a few years ago.

I've got a few of those in stainless steel that I've used around the patio for 20 years or so with citronella oil. Never had any real concerns about them affecting food. Keep the wicks trimmed and they don't create much (if any) soot.

I'd pay $20 for that one.

Whenever I see this character on one of the cartoons my son watches I think it looks like a BGE converted into a robot.
