We're headed there next week for some R and R. Never been. Anybody been and can offer up some must dos or must eats? Any fishing tips?

  • The Matlacha bridge may be the best bridge to fish off of in the country. And right now is a prime time. Do a little digging on the Net and find out what they are catching and what bait they are using. Permit and mutton snapper for sure. Tarpon are not out of the question either.

Wow.  I had to look that up and was surprised it is near where we vacationed several times - 20+ years ago.  I had an aunt with a house on Little Gasparilla Island (a barrier island a couple of islands north of Pine Island - there are no roads to Little Gasparilla so we brought a boat).  On a different trip we went to Sanibel.

We did probably the best boating we've ever done in that area.  Saw some incredible sights.  A school of stingrays over 100 yards wide swimming in about 6 feet of water.   Dolphins that jumped next to our boat when we tied up under the bridge to Boca Grande - doing flips.  If you get a chance, rent a boat and explore the barrier islands and out into the gulf - but do it as early in the day as possible because the gulf is usually glassy smooth in the morning and gets rough by noon.

I understand that one of the best tarpon holes in the world is on the south end of Boca Grande (Gasparilla Island) - so a charter trip could be a good thing.

I would probably also rents kayaks or stand up paddle boards and go on a tour.

I'm not much help on restaurants as we would load a boat full of food and drink for the week and take it over to the island...

    Have a great time.
