Fire ring

So...I have an old style fire ring that does not have notches for the platesetter.
But it does have some round scoop-outs along the top(?) edge. It was suggested that these were to allow the fire ring to be inserted and removed more easily. But the fire ring is conical. It is a smaller diameter at one edge than the other. If I try to insert the fire ring with the scoop-outs down--towards the firebox, it will not go all the way down to the firebox...it wedges in the base several inches above the firebox.
If I put the fire ring in with the scoop-out to the top, the fire ring sits comfortably on top of the firebox. But it is really hard to get out.
So what's up with that? Is there a special tool?
Also, while I am at it, someone suggested that you can place a second fire ring on top of the first to raise the cooking grid higher. I suspect you would need to turn the second one so that the scoop-outs are down and the two circumferences matched up.
Adding a platesetter on top of the second ring might make a good pizza set up. Anyone run like this?
Could you also put the second fire ring on top of the plate setter?

Actually the "notches" that fit the 3 legs of the PS are a relatively new change. None of my eggs have them. As for ways to get the fire ring out I merely slip a putty knife under to raise it enough to get my fingers under the first side. BTW the only time I ever take my fire ring out is doing a once or twice a year thorough clean out as sales will build up through the quarter sized holes in the firebox.
I also use that fire brick trick.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
Sounds like overthinking to me.
Fire ring only fits one way.
Buy a Woo from the Ceramic Grill Store or a Weber grid and three 1/4" carriage bolts (which is what I use). My setup looks like this. Want it higher? Buy longer bolts. I don't like bricks on the fire ring because I'd worry about breaking something if one fell.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

...getting my fire ring out is easy. I just stick my fingers in one of the big cracks in my fire box.
