It's always confounding how the same folks that complain about the government being so incompetent that it can't tell its a$$ from its elbow are also the ones claiming that the government is capable of monitoring a gazillion devices in a gazillion homes producing a gazillion petabytes of data each day.
I understand what you're trying to say here, and for the most part I agree with the sentiment.

However... I am also familiar with the caliber of people working inside the NSA and how that matches up against the caliber of people working in Congress, and let's just say the chasm is about as wide as Stormy Daniels'

There's certainly no doubt that many agencies have quite a few bright talented people. The same can actually be said of Congress.

I think there is also little doubt that just having "a roomful of the best and brightest" is no guarantee of success/competency (whether in a public or private sector bureaucracy).

Not to pick on the NSA in particular, but the catastrophic security breaches of NSA/Ft. Meade certainly illustrates that. It's pretty mind blowing what tools the NSA allowed to be hacked/stolen in the last few years.

@fishlessman mentioned it, but I've been reading some pretty scary advances the Chinese have made with the combo of AI and video/sound monitoring.  They've set up cameras in regions that are less than totally aligned with the Party, and can basically track every citizen in that region, constantly.
This scares the **** out of me.

I posted an article here the other day about this.  The Chinese government has a scoring system they use to grade everyone.  They use AI to track people and give them these scores.  The scores affect their credit to buy a house all the way to being able to buy a plane ticket to leave the country.

Pro tip: When plotting The Rebellion be sure to go to the main electrical panel and throw the breaker to cut off electricity to the whole dwelling beforehand.

Speaking of privacy, the government has all sorts of rules with HIPAA, yet you are in an exam room at your doctor's office and can hear everything going on with the prostate exam in the next room. How about making a rule about exam rooms having a white noise machine?
