Bernzomatic TS8000 Problem

Carolina Q
Carolina Q Posts: 14,831
Last night, I used the torch to light my egg. Discovered I had finally emptied the propane cylinder so I grabbed a new one (Ace Hardware, green cylinder). As I was using it, I noticed a cold, wet sensation on my finger. Looked at the hand grip of the torch and there was propane spraying out of the pinhole... here.

Wasn't quite finished lighting, but close enough so I quit. I know @fishlessman has one at the bottom of his lake where he threw it when it blew up while he was using it. I don't need THAT! I don't have a lake! =)

Today, I tested it again and it worked perfectly, whether upright or upside down as it would be when lighting an egg. I guess I'll call Bernzomatic on Monday, but thought I'd ask if anyone here had any ideas. For now, paper towel and oil! Thanks.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Thanks. Don't know what a blowout disk is, but I'm guessing I won't find one at Lowe's. It sounds like it's a sacrificial part so if it failed, the torch shouldn't be working now. Yet it seems to be okay today.

I don’t have the TS8000. But have tinkered on several Benzomatic torches in the past. On the ones I have fooled with, more often than not, when they vent off it’s usually caused by an o-ring. Can’t say for sure that’s your issue without actually seeing the torch. But it’s my best guess. You can usually get a pack of o-rings for less than a dollar. They normally come in a 10 pack.

Anyone else find it suspect that even @SGH’s non-anus posts have to mention “o-rings”?

My torch stopped working a while back and I was about to pitch it  whenI remembered someone posting about how spiders love to make webs in  the nozzles.

Took less than 5 mins to clean it out and it has worked just fine since then.

I think the lifetime warranty covers torches made in 2016 or later. No help there.

Don't see how it could be spiders as it lights and burns fine. I've had that problem before and the symptoms are different.

My money's on SGH's solution, an O-ring. Still, if the O-ring failed last night, why does it seem to be fine today?

The o-ring may just be cracked or got a little off seated. A cracked o-ring (if its a minor crack) will seat 95% of the time under low pressure. As o-rings age they stretch and get a little loose. Sometimes pressure will cause them to “move” a little when they are loose. You may get lucky and get to use the torch hundreds of more times without issue. But my best guess is still some issue with a o-ring.

Thanks. Guess I'll figure out how to take it apart.

It’s not really hard, but it’s tedious and aggravating. My biggest problem is I simply can’t see very good anymore. And as you already know, everything on it is very, very small.

Didn't know there was such a thing as a torch specialist.

Remember, an o-ring brought down the Space Shuttle Challenger

Hahaha, I called Bernzomatic today. "Probably a seal or valve. Can't be fixed. Not under warranty given when you bought it. Have a nice day."

Removed the brass fitting where the cylinder screws on, then the rubber flat washer, but didn't see any way to go further. Looked like maybe a special tool would be needed. I've made my share of special tools, but not going to bother here. So I just reassembled. Lit just fine, no leaks, even upside down.

I just rolled up some paper towels in a coffee can and put a little oil in there. I'll get a new torch eventually. Got a plumbing project coming up.
