RIP for sure - He was brilliant in Frasier - so many great episodes.  I still love his sarcastic 'it's eclectic" line.

I heard an interview with him in the last year on WGN radio. Mahoney was a dedicated actor. Played many roles at Chicago's Steppenwolf theater starting in '79. During the interview, he came off as a no nonsense fellow. Clearheaded, but just humorous enough to not seem over serious. He obviously loved his work even late in life.
