I second the MacBook pro. Had a Dell that only lasted about 2 years before it tanked...customer service/ warranty was absolutely piss poor..Had problems from the moment I first fired it up. And I don't game, I don't stream it was just for school and projects so wasn't used hard

Bought my parents an hp for Christmas..Had some software issues communicating with the hardware that wouldn't communicate with the wireless network or printer ....even had my IT guy from work come down and tinker with it...it's a no go..and hp wouldn't honor warranty as was software not hardware ...Microsoft wouldn't do ****...as was hardware...so i got fu#&*#
Twice ...

Had my MacBook work well for me for 7 years before I killed it with a milkshake....and and bought another one after ..had it now for 5 years and still works great

I think I only paid $700 something for my sp3 and that was 2.5 yrs ago.  It was certified refurbished from Microsoft and came with a warranty.  I think the sp4 was just coming out.

I had to buy the type cover separately, but I know it came with the pen and charger.

Sp3 with 8gb ram and i5 processor + 2 docks + 2 arc mouse + pen + ac charger + lighted type cover = under $1000 over 2 yrs ago.

Yeah buddy......it was a great deal.  All on eBay.

Just looked, $714 for the SP3 w/ pen and charger.  Paid about $110 for each dock.  Type cover was $72 and the two Arc's were about $50 each.  So, right at $1000 in August 2015.

We have all our MBPs from when they were core 2 and they all still work perfectly.  They are expensive but they are commercial level construction and the Unix based OS is robust and secure.  I've gone months without rebooting.

My retina display MBP actually fell off the roof of my car and just a little dent in the aluminium alloy case (machined out of a billet).  

The most common problem is the power supplies, and after going through 6 or 7 3rd party units (cheap) I've learned my lesson and only buy the Apple units, which are very robust.  

My MBP is running 12 hours a day, on average, 365.

It's almost 5 years old and still screaming fast.  Also, dual graphics engines, I run a 4K monitor, no problems.  The MBP switches seamlessly from any environment without having to **** around with the graphics or peripheral configurations.

The only time our 8 yr old MBP reboots is for an update.  My Lenovo x1 tablet needs a reboot every morning when I start the day and whenever I get home in the afternoon go finish the day.  That thing is garbage though

My daughter is in Grad School, I started her with a Mac Book Pro in undergrad and she still has it and loves it.

I also bit the bullet and got a MacBook Pro 3-4 years ago. Runs flawlessly and is worth the investment. I get frustrated easily by computers, and I love the mac. I also have iPad and iPhone, and like the way they communicate. I don't game, or do anything that pushes it. 

I bought a refurbished Dell for the sole purpose of running quickbooks because I don't like Quickbooks for Mac, and that thing frustrates the heck out of me. Every time I start it, it needs to update, and has crashed more times than my MacBook has even though I rarely use it and have only had it for a year or so. I didn't want to spend hundreds for a computer I would only use for one program.

Most laptops are only designed to really last three years.  That’s not to say that after three years they tend to be useless, but rather that they start to have issues.

That Macs tend to last quite a bit longer should be part of the calculus when considering their price.

I'm too tight to pay apple price and don't buy into the culture either. I had an HP Probook for about 7 years for work, now got another HP which is light (just over 3 lbs) with SSD hard drive and i7 processor. Does the job at a reasonable price.

I bought my Mac Book pro in 2011, still using it. My computer before this was the Sony Vaio, lasted 3 years.

Ha, I actually found a MacBook Pro at the intersection in front of our house. Kid down the street left it on the roof of his car and it slid off going around the corner.

It was covered and mud a had a few scratches but still worked perfectly.
