Why does anyone willfully choose to live in MN?
Good people and good food I guess. Winters can be long. I think it makes you appreciate the other 3 seasons more than most. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Really?  Where else have you lived?
Born and raised in MN. I can't see myself leaving anytime soon.
Ah.  OK.  My brother’s in-laws are like that.  A few of them I think have never even left the state.
Haha. I don't think I'm that bad. I think the last time I've counted I'm around 30 or so different states.

Money Magazine named my hometown the #1 city in the nation that has under 100,000 population. It can't be all that bad here in MN. ;) A couple other MN cities have cracked the top spot as well recently. I can see why people might think other with the harsh winters
I think it’s a perfectly nice state... six months out of the year.

But I get it.  I grew up with plenty of people in NH who’ll never leave there and are pretty convinced it’s the best state in the country (and the arguments have merit).
How did you end up in NC just curious?
    I’m a huge NASCAR fan.
That was going to be my first guess. You seem a little red neck.

ND in February- air temp was -36F. With windchill it was like -55 or -60.

    Like nothing I’ve ever experienced.

No idea why people would live like that on purpose :)

  • I spent four years in college near Fargo where the wind blows every day, so anything south of that feels balmy by comparison. Not sure how many actual days we have below zero in Minnesota, but it's probably still less than the number of excruciatingly hot days in Arizona or other places down south. From May through September I certainly have no desire to be elsewhere.

Cool topic for a thread. (no pun intended)
    2 stories:

    1) Killington VT as @fishlessman stated.
-20 something without windchill. They did not let you go to the top of the mountain; only midway. One quick run and in you went. They had ski patrol at the top, and before anyone went down they would look for any exposed skin. Same at the bottom for the nuts who tried to do 2 runs. If any was exposed they pretty much forced you to go in and cover it.

    2) -30-something with no windchill. Bear Creek CO.
Buddy was on ski patrol. He had buddies on the snowmaking/grooming crew. Went up in a snow cat one evening and "helped" groom slopes to midnight. Actually, I did not do a damn thing but listen to music in a long sleeve t-shirt and held on as my a$$ puckered when we groomed any expert slope.  At one point, we stopped at a snow making machine that needed to be moved. We got dressed for about 5 minutes, then got out in the pitch black not being able to see a thing outside the lights from the cat. The noise from the snow maker was deafening even with hearing protection. We trudged through some thigh and waist deep snow as there was no crust since it was so cold.  That type of cold and environment was totally foreign to my body, and every part of me was telling me I did not belong there, and my mind knew that.

Glad I did it, but never want do it again.

The Wall Street Journal ranks Flint, Michigan the 3rd worst city to live in for 2017.  I grew up in metropolitan Detroit.  The City of Detroit is ranked #1.  I'm very proud.

three people i grew up with had kids od this year, property taxes are just insane now with the mass folks moving in and growing the towns expenses. the southern nh state school systems used to produce sat 800 scores in math, not even in the same league now, home schooling is getting big( better education and you can keep a better eye on the drug thing), its bad enough that the locals are moving to the western part of the state where its still mostly unchanged, or fleeing the state.  i have never seen the drug thing so bad, they just built a rail trail walk/bike path from lawrence mass up thru the lower part of nh, its locally called the heroin trail, the joke is "build it and they will come".  this is not the state i grew up in, maybe further up north but not south of concord down. this stuff happens every where but nh was mostly spared for most of my life from the crap.  if you want a job, pay no income or sales tax, be near mountains, cities, forests, the ocean, clean lakes and rivers, not so bad seasons, best summers etc, you're good to go. raise a family and you might want narcan in the medicine cabinet.  you have been gone awhile, the kids in cuffs crying on the side of the road getting busted is a routine sighting nowadays, cars getting stripped, pill jars lined up on the hoods...its real newenglandy

Sorry to hear that, fish.  You are right, it has been some time since I lived in the state - more than 20 years now.  Hard to believe it's been that long.

I do still have a lot of friends and family in the state however, and my folks visited a few months ago.  We have definitely heard about the opiod issue in NH, it's a big issue for sure.  I have a good friend from high school coming down to visit in the spring.  She teaches in one of the public high schools there now and lives in New Boston.  It'll be interesting to get her perspective on the changes.

Stationed at Grand Forks AFB ND for three years.  -28F was the coldest true temp I'd seen, had ten days consecutively where it never got above -20, and worst windchill was -85F (the ICBM missile crews and Security Police had to Shelter In Place that time, pulled 48-hour shifts, ugh!)
We had to remove a cable from a security plug on one site, -20 or so but thank goodness it was calm.  Fifteen separate wires had to be loosened, held in place with tiny, 1/4" brass bolts (read, no gloves!)  First tech jumped out of the truck, attacked it with a screwdriver, and after removing three screws, jumped back in the truck because he couldn't feel his fingers anymore.  Then I jumped out, three more bolts, no feeling, back into the truck.  The three of us eventually got the plug loose and returned it to the depot.  Turned out the cable was defective, and it couldn't be pulled out of the conduit (frozen in place) until June!  We had to keep two cops stationed at that launch site for the rest of the winter/spring.
The really sad thing?  I actually spent more time outside during the winter, because the mosquitoes are so bad during the 6-week summer!   :|

hoping she is far enough west from manchester,  the drugs are routed thru lawrence, thru 495, 93, and 95. its spreading but nashua, manchester and concord are hurting, the boarder towns east to the coast, up to portsmouth and up to portland maine.  for a couple years i was seeing a bust or 3 on 95n every single friday going to maine. they had a drug command van, officers in white hazmat suits stripping cars, dusting prints etc.  this slowed down this year, maybe upgraded tacticts for policing, every bridge now has a camera on the backside and lawrence is covered with cameras looking for outa state plates.
this reads like an epidemic.  not sure why but the majority of busts, od's, shootings, stabings are no longer in the news or newspapers

Went to work on a mine site about 5 years ago. -40 ambient that a.m. C or F doesnt matter at that point. Took snowmachine 12km from camp to truck parked at highway. Got it started with booster pack and went to site. Felt like driving without power steering and shocks with the brakes on the whole way. Extension cords cracked that day when bent at more than 90. Majority of the work was inside, so wasnt a huge deal.

Here's about the only worth-while data I recall from some run time in Hawaii: "Record high temp (Honolulu) 95*F; record low (Hono) 56*F."   Talk about paradise.  Oh, to win the lottery and deal with finding quality lump out there  ;)
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.
  • Few years back the temp in the pickup on the way ice fishing said -33. I remember a few years back, egging a brisket at -20 / -30 range. Egg cooked just like it had when it was 100+ in the summer.
