Christmas Gift I am not sure about.
My Wife bought me a Blackstone 36" as a gift. She bought everything you need even a cover. I wanted one for a while but talked myself out of it. I am looking for opinions on up keep. That is why I did not want it anymore. I just figured they take up time to keep in good shape. Is it bad to keep from rusting. It will be kept outside with only the cover she bought for it.

Season the top per instructions. The first thing you should do is griddle up bacon. Then use the grease to cook onions. Put those bacons and onions on anything...burgers, omelets, Philly cheesesteaks...whatever. You’ll be glad you got it.
Upkeep should be pretty easy if you keep it covered. The more you cook on it, the more it gets seasoned.
Cleanup after cooking is pretty easy. While the griddle is hot, I squirt water on it and then scrape the steaming water across the top. Let it evaporate and then wipe down with a paper towel to clean up food bits. Then, I squirt a little peanut oil on it and spread it around. I treat it like cast iron skillets.
Trust me, a Blackstone is a great gift. You can make some killer grub, and this forum has embraced it wholeheartedly. You’ll be able to find lots of ideas on here!LBGE since June 2012

Mine sits outside and I use the cover. Season it properly and you'll be fine if you use if often. I coat mine in lard while it's still warn and then it solidifies once cooled, adding a layer of protection.

^^^^^^ You know the above from @SemolinaPilchard is the only option here. In a few years you may have alternatives but right now...
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
I just got one for Christmas too - but no cover. Was looking at these on amazon - or prehaps making my own.

I also keep mine outside under a cover. I use upside down foil pans to keep the cover elevated over the cook top. Cheap and effective.

Be sure to put something under the cover to tent it so that rain won’t collect and leak through.
