What is this Rockwood you speak of???

The local Ace Hardware started selling Rockwood recently.   Super excited to try it for the first time.  Simple burgers tonight!

    Great move right there.
And since I'm here- there have been a few wood BGE table fires caused by the BGE being on a paver w/o an air gap between the BGE and paver.  The usual scenario is that the wood under the paver fatigues over time due to the heat stress and eventually fails.  This causes the BGE to tip and in the fire cases the burning lump ignites other flammable materials.  FWIW-

My wife today rolled her eyes as I  purchased my Third bag of rockwood today.... I reasonably and factually explained that the 2 and one half bags already in the garage would get us though a major event similar to the power outage at Atlanta airport that occurred today. Just common sense!

I get twitchy if I drop below six bags...
  • Does it really matter?  I’d say so....  I used to use Cowboy lump on my “regular” charcoal grill. When I purchased my BGE and because of this site all I ever use now is Rockwood. The difference is really quality. No more dust and the size is totally different. I get chunks vs pieces and sometime, small branches.

  • I encourage folks to try several brands so they'll never have to second guess whether Rockwood is worth a few extra bucks.

Just a few words about Rockwood.

When I first purchased my egg I was really stupid. I only used the recommended lump, which was BGE lump.

Then after some really foul tasting cooks, I decided to be less stupid. I found some other brands that were superior to the BGE lump. That was not hard to do, and did not take long.

Then, I found Rockwood, and although still registering a pretty solid 5.5 on the stupid meter, I am turning out the best cooks I have ever done, on my Eggs.

Bottom line: there is lump charcoal, then there is Rockwood.

Being less stupid is good. So if you want to be less stupid, like me, use Rockwood.

    Two Cents on lump:

Rockwood is good stuff, so "was" Ozark Oak. In the $1.35/lb. market, I don't think Rockwood can be beat.

Lump made from fruitwood is a bit more expensive, not anything you would call neutral burning. There's a place in Montana that sells lump made from specific tree species: Apple, Cherry, Mesquite and Pecan. That stuff sells for $1.50/lb. PLUS shipping. I've tried the apple lump, and it has a very pleasant and mild aroma. I mix it in with my regular lump for long cooks.

It's easy to find lump on Amazon, a quick search today shows Quebracho delivered for Prime members, 40lb. bag for $49. ($1.22/lb) Quebracho is not better (IMO) than Rockwood, but it's 12¢ per pound less and far far better than Royal Oak. I can "live" with Quebracho for the difference in price when it's just burgers and dogs and chicken, etc.

Parker in Tennessee looks promising. Never tried it, but I've got a trip through planned next month on my way to Tallahassee. I'm bringing my little Acorn on vacation, so if I can pick up a bag or two I'll give it a test burn.

BBQ is a celebration of culture in America. It is the closest thing we have to the wines and cheeses of Europe.

Drive a few hundred miles in any direction, and the experience changes dramatically.

  • I too went with the BGE lump when I first got my egg (which was only 3 months ago so what the hell do I know!) and have since switched to Rockwood.  Killer stuff and 3 bags dropped off at your front door all for only $85!

Or use it in the fire pit, or on a kettle, or camping.  Lots of uses for non premium lump.
