There are a heck of a lot of worse things a young man could do with his time. I find it’s very addictive when you are able to create food that people enjoy. He’s got a great start and a great mentor. Bravo buddy!

Thanks much my friend.  Science is his favorite class.  The kiddos are more engaged, and willing to try new things, when they have a couple of hands in the mix.

He may be a cook at your fest soon.  So cliche, but so true, and as you know firsthand...I try not to blink, as they grow so fast.  :)

Oh yeah, thanks for the history lesson @nolaegghead.  I've been meaning to ask - and this seems like as good a place as any - when did people start putting their hands over their hearts for the national anthem.  I know that was not a norm or expectation when I was in school - up through 1990.  We only did it for the Pledge of Allegiance.  Then in the late 1990s it seemed to be something people occasionally did during the national anthem.  And now it seems to be the norm/expectation.  Did I miss something?  Was there a law passed?  I've tried the google with no luck.

@SamIAm2, thanks for the link. However, I’m specifically asking about putting your hand over your heart during the national anthem. When I was a kid that was actively discouraged. A kid who didn’t understand that you do that for the pledge of allegiance but not for the national anthem was considered to be “not too bright” or “special”.  I’m wondering when or why that changed.

@Foghorn -  took a bit more digging but the information can be found in U.S. Code 301 here: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/36/301.

Well, not quite. From June 22, 1942 until July 7, 1976 you were correct, the right hand only held headdress during the national anthem. But the history is pretty straight forward if a bit difficult to find.

The 71st Congress established The Star-Spangled Banner as the National Anthem of the United States of America on March 3, 1931. Also enacted on that date was the establishment of a national military park to commemorate the Battle of Kings Mountain on the 7th day of October, 1780 in South Carolina. Congress appropriated $225,000 to create and establish the national park. I visited this national park once, not knowing at the time that it was a Revolutionary War battleground.

On June 22, 1942 Section 6 was added to Public Law 380 which established “That when the national anthem is played and the flag is not displayed, all present should stand and face toward the music. Those in uniform should salute at the first note of the anthem, retaining this position until the last note. All others should stand at attention, men removing the headdress. When the flag is displayed, the salute to the flag should be given.”

It wasn’t until Public Law 94-344 —July 7, 1976 that the above mentioned Section 6 was struck out and replaced with the following revised section :

“Section 6. During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention, facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.  Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same  manner they would if the flag were displayed there.”

Public law 105-225 on August 12, 1998 Included two sections

“(A) Designation. — The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.” and

“(b) CONDUCT DURING PLAYING. — During a rendition of the national anthem—

    (1) when the flag is displayed —

    (A) all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;

    (B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

    (C) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; and

    (2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.”

This law incorporated the 71st congress designation of the Star-Spangled Banner into the new public law and moved the format from paragraph to outline format with no changes to the wording.

Not ideal, but I'm good at 32 for this smallie.  Still may go longer depending on schedule.

  • awesome!  I got 2 a little over 6 lbs and went back this morning and got one 12 3/4 to take down to Tennessee on Friday.  Saves me a trip to Costco during the rush on Saturday and at least 4 bucks a pound.

Did you see you can save an additional $10 on the roast if you buy a bottle of Franciscan Cabernet?

Thanks, looking forward to trying it, likely with the PR.  13.5lbs and a bottle of good cab for $80 out the door.  It's officially a meat party.
