All,

We're going on a college road trip to Texas with my daughter in January.  We're flying in and out of Austin but will also be visiting Waco and College Station.   We'll be staying 2 nights in Waco, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good BBQ joint?

Thanks.

I kid (kind of) but there is no good bbq in Waco. Go to Ninfas and/or Chuy's and enjoy some good TexMex.

  • Not sure what you travel plans are but if you find yourself driving between Austin and college station on Saturday, make sure you leave early and get to Snow's BBQ in Lexington (kinda half way between Austin and CS). It's always #1 or 2 on the top bbq places on earth (Texas). They are open Saturday only from 8 am to when they run out of meat. If you aren't there by 10, you will likely have limited choices by the time you eat. Otherwise, all the regular spots in Austin are still as good as ever and Franklin's opened back up last week after the fire. Lot's of good food in Austin. Don't sell yourself short and just chase BBQ. Mix it up!

  • Thanks for the advice and the recommendation for Mexican.  Snow's is out due to our schedule, but I've heard it is great.  Wi\e'll wait for BBQ until we are back in Austin.

  • I don't know of anything in CS either. They have Rudy's in Waco and CS but the one in Waco sucks. Never been to the one in CS. Rudy's is kind of fast food bbq but it's decent at most. Some are no Bueno and Waco is one of those. When in doubt, rock out with your guac out and go tex mex.

Its not a full BBQ experience but he Chopped Beef and Brisket Sandwiches at the Buccees in Temple are tolerable when youre hungry.  If nothing else a stop here is worth seeing it once.

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting.  The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president.

Guys saying Waco doesn't have elite BBQ are wrong (although, historically that's been true).  There's several new places that compete with the best in the state (maybe not Franklin's level, but close).

Guess Family Barbecue is the one with the most buzz.

    Also new and supposedly excellent:

    Honky Tonk Kid BBQ

Red Wagon BBQ - I've actually heard this is the best, but that was from only a single serious BBQ lover.

Please don't waste your time on Rudy's or Vitek's.  You'll get a bad impression. Although, Vitek's is good for what it is, it isn't serious BBQ.
