The Roccbox isn't perfect but for portability, quality of construction, dual fuel capability, ease of dealing with the retailer and the company itself for answers and now one use in the field at a tailgate party, it is unbeatable. I could not lug the minimax to this party, nor could i use it unless it had a gas adapter because anything except propane is prohibited at the tailgate spot i attend. Unhappy about this restriction at tailgate but hey, adapt. So, gas burner was the only way i could go....Carolina Q said:The more I read, the more I want a Roccbox. For now, my 1980's vintage electric oven with pizza steel will have to suffice. Made some pies last week for my son and mom... in HER 1980's vintage oven. Among my best ever!
Egged pies are more trouble than they're worth.
One thing about the uuni is that it does get to temperature fast and it has the inner SS layer that is separated by a layer of air from the outer shell. Plus, it was half the cost of the roccbox. I, being the cheap bastard i am, went ahead with the uuni and then learned the gas burner would be available in summer of 2017, (i got the uuni mid 2016) i thought that would be cool. Anyway, the frustration i had with uuni is that when i inquired on anything internal to the company with log in credentials yielded no communication. some youtuber inquired a few days ago on the uuni gas burner availability to which there was a quick response apologizing for the delay and to have continued patience.
So, no more uuni.
Roccbox like i said isn't perfect but it's a viable solution to what i needed and i LOVE it. It is for pizza and for searing CI shallow pan steaks and fish. That's all i'll use it for. The BGE will be used for larger scale pizza parties but the roccbox ROCKS and will be awesome to take to the beach, mountains, tailgates, and friends' houses.
i guess i wanted a roccbox all along and went the cheap route thinking that perhaps a gas adapter could be homemade fashioned and then my hopes really got up with the promise of a 2017 summer delivery of the gas burner for the uuni. That disappeared like a popcorn fart in a windstorm...
now i have the roccbox and wish that i had just gotten this from the start and not gotten tangled up with uuni. oh well, live and learn...i'd be really pissed if i supported the uuni pro as i don't think US indie go go's are getting their gas burners yet- and those supporters will be the first ones. My prediction is that uuni's gas burner delivery to regular non-indie go go supporters who have 2s and 3 models will be at least 6 months behind schedule. maybe they;ll have them available by January.
But i will have fired up the roccbox at least a half a dozen times, maybe a couple dozen times between now adn then and made a lot of pies.
one thing i will use the roccbox for is NON pizza parties- ie just the family when i make a couple of pies. the bge is a lot to fire up just to make 1-2 pies, and the uuni i works for small batch but the roccbox with gas burner will be a really great and easy to execute 2 pie batch on a regular basis the kids will love.... -

Been reading great things about the uuni Pro from a few folks that have had theirs for a few weeks. Even tho I have a Blackstone pizza oven I might get an uuni Pro come next Spring. Maybe the gas burners will be available in the US by then.

The gas burner for the uuni pro looks like they could have added an extra burner. I wonder what the BTU output is of their design:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4Qp5k6VfeQ&feature=youtu.be
Not that I really care too much about the gas burner myself - if I want to use gas I'll just fire up the Blackstone. But I like to burn wood so it would be nice to use wood in the uuni pro. On the other hand, the Pizza Bike fellow had a blog post a couple of weeks ago talking about switching to the Roccbox from the uunis he had been using for years. He was afraid that switching to the gas/Roccbox the taste would be different but it turned out that neither he nor his customers could tell the difference.
I know it's a moot point for you now @westernbbq but uuni mentioned on Twitter a week or so ago that they are getting closer to having the gas burners available. The big holdup is that various countries have different rules and regs they are trying to meet.
Varying rules/regs can certainly be a pain for small makers to deal with. I remember a few years ago that the Bug Assault people had great difficulty in trying to ship their product to backers in quite a few countries because it was "gun-like". I believe there were a few countries they just gave up on being able to ship to.

Could not disagree more. I find it very easy to light up the egg for 'za while prepping the kitchen for pizza assembly. And then make repeatable quality pies using a tool that I already have.Carolina Q said:

I know everyone's experiences are different, and you may be chasing a different result than I'm happy with. Sounds like the classic kitchen oven is working well for you which is awesome. For me, I have better results on the egg and am resisting posting multiple pictures of delicious egged pies... So... hard.. not to link.
I can't lie, it's taken some effort to get a repeatable method that works for me, but I'm there and I enjoy it.
Not to take away from the RB, though.
That thing is purpose built for 'za and sounds fun to use while spitting out a string of pies all day long. I just like my egg and that the kids regularly ask me " can we do a pizza night? You make the BEST pizza!"

I saw that uuni was having issues with us approval. So, what they should have done is gotten that worked out before telling us that gas burners would be avail summer 2017. Moreover, communicating with the uuni company involves a series of secret clue deciphering that, once you figure that out, they still dont answer your questions. But they are great on social media, which in applications like this i have zero tolerance for. I remember bge teasing us with xxl, first it was bynXmas, then super bowl, then spring, fathers day etc. Then the minimax is introduced and the same thing, by the holidays, super bowl, spring, summer then by fotball tailgating season and then finally inpocked mine up before thanksgiving day 2014. Worth the wait but frustrated with the tease and am glad to have not dropped a ton of coin on the xxl...HeavyG said:Been reading great things about the uuni Pro from a few folks that have had theirs for a few weeks. How much would it cost to hire someone to answer emails amd phone calls at uuni? Or how about a weekly email message with updates or non updates? Something, anything is better than what theyve done. This is blatantly stupid on uunis part because they lost biz and while i wont be on a crusade against them, when anyone ever asks for a portable pizza oven recommendation ill be recommending the roccbox and indicating it is definitely worth the extra money....i sold one for roccbox at the tailgate on sunday....

Habit I guess. Have done it both ways, and turning it off seemed more stable, and has become part of the launch procedure. Wanted to do the switch mod, but never did get around to it. Bearing mod, and Chauflector, was enough.Zippylip said:

I also turn off the carousel when I launch pies. I find it's easier with it off and it's simple enough to flick it off and on. @DMW taught me this trick.Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ.... -

For me, it is easier to twist a knob to turn on my oven than to light and stabilize an egg. Even my steel is ready to go - it lives in my oven. And since my pies, to me, are as good or better from the oven, it's an easy decision. Maybe I'll give the egg another chance one of these days, but I think it's been over 4 years since I've egged a pizza.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I plan on dropping this motor in, at some point. Moves CCW too. Even though I switch the batteries now to do that. Feel better plugging in while I prep and preheat. If the platter sits for some time in the heat, it warps.HeavyG said:
