OT - European Christmas Markets - Anyone ever go? - OT
We are
headed to Europe for the Christmas Markets later this week. The rough
itinerary and main cities: landing in Zurich, train to Munich, picking
up a car and our friends from England, then headed down to
Austria passing through Salzburg to Vienna, up to Prague in Czechia,
over to Ciechanow Poland, then ending in Berlin Germany.
I fully plan on gorging myself with sausages, cheeses, fondues, perogies, pastries of every kind and mugs of mulled wine which may add up to be gallons over the course of our journey.
With that being said, we are looking for smaller towns to stop in along the way to be fully immersed in the European cultures as possible. We have some connections (friends of friends who hooked us up together) in Prague, Ciechanow and Berlin, but the rest we are on our own. No real set plans, which is very atypical for us.
Anyone ever been to the Christmas Markets over there or have any advice on must-do's or must sees roughly along that route?
@DoubleEgger I think you headed over there not too long ago? Any thoughts?

We did that 4 years ago in Germany and Austria. There was one small town we enjoyed immensely, in Austria, Imst, I think, which was unique. Small and a lot of really unique hand made gifts.
We started in Stuttgart and that Christmas Market is a definite go to. Total Sensory Overload.
It was actually divided into Modern and Renaissance Christmas Markets. It was very, very cool. Almost every town in Germany and Austria has one going on, we went to so many, and night time is the time to go, with all the lights and music.
We spent a couple weeks in the Austrian Alps skiing, after meeting our folks in Germany.

Let me do some homework and I’ll reply back later today.

Not sure how long you are going for, but Berlin is worthy of more than a brief stop over.

Berchtesgaden between Munich and Salzburg has a salt mine (Salzburgwerk) that is a good visit. Eagle's Nest too, but shut in the winter.

I happened to have been in Düsseldorf during the holiday season and was blown away, it was great...everyone outside, all decorated, it was like something out of a fairy tail. Very cool. Hope to go back and travel around some time.LBGE & SBGE. Central Texas.

Check security briefings first.
I stopped my lad from going - then last week 6 bad guys were arrested in Germany for planning an attack. They are high profile targets (place of mass gathering and strong Christian symbolism) on mainland Europe and frequently reconnoitred by extremists.
I am not saying don't go, but satisfy yourself that protective security is obvious and commensurate.Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay
