I would just recycle an old grill grate, lay it across one side of your fire pit and you're good to go.
Depending on the size of your fire pit, build a big fire first, let it burn down, then keep the fire to one side and push coals under the cooking area as needed to adjust temp.
Sounds like you may want something nicer, but people already provided you fancy suggestions.
