Sorry about the fire. At least everyone is okay.

If you cook dual zone then Primo is the way to go.

Good that no  one was injured.  Give the search function here a look.  Several recent threads discussing various ceramic cookers.  FWIW-
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

It hurts to see these pics.
    Glad all are safe.

Never been a huge deck fan, especially cooking on one.

Hope you can make some adjustments, so it will never happen again.

So you bought a used egg, had it on a wood deck in a wood table, with a roof over it apparently, and had a fire. Was there a proper air gap between egg and table?  A table nest? A paver?
No roof over it.... proper air gap and what does new or used have to do with it if you don't mind me asking?
I don't mind at all. You mentioned emailing BGE about the episode. Not sure what they can or will do if you aren't the original owner, that's all.

    Primo makes a quality product.

As I have said before, there are two types of ceramic; cracked ceramic, and ceramic that is going to crack. If for nothing else, due to that, I would go with a BGE due to the lifetime wrranty

The fire seems peculiar, indeed, and I am sorry for the loss. I am also thankful you and your family escaped unharmed.

Others have said to get your grill away from the house and off the deck. I have seen grease fires, on a treated wood deck, and the blaze from those fires were amazing, to say the least. I absolutely agree, do not put something on or near combustionable surfaces that has the ability to ignite those surfaces.

I keep mine in a nest, on a stone patio. I keep a watchful eye and guard the egg, and its fire, like a hawk.

It is no coincidence, I have it close to a water hose, and also easy access to a chemical extinguisher, nearby. I do wear belts and suspenders as well. Just sayin'.

I think if you choose either of the two you will be happy. I only own BGE's and the experience I have had with the units, across the board, keeps me purchasing the next size, in the BGE family.

    Best of luck to you.

Wow I am really sorry this happened. As others mentioned it would be nice to not have it on a wooden deck. It looks like your deck is just off the ground anyway so perhaps you could replace the deck with a concrete patio. Just my $.02- I would much rather have a patio anyway. Far less maintenance.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Sorry for your trouble, but as others have said, glad everyone lived.

Primo quality is good.  Some things are better than bge.   I've had the 18".  On the round, multi level is difficult due to the shallow dome.

  • I decided to go with the primo went ahead and got one today. Thanks for all the help! Now time to build a metal table.

Suddenly All the armchair Fire Marshals appear from the bushes. Sorry for your property loss. Afree on an all metal table or like you said metal chassis with concrete or granite top. Plenty of folks happy with both products. I have 0 expertise with Primo but, clearly the warranty differs between the two. Good luck.

I don't want to plat fire marshal, but knowing the BGE pretty well and how fire works......it's hard not to throw out an opinion.

Looking at that picture, the way the base broke, it does not suggest that the thing split and dumped it hot charcoal all over the deck.  Plus, I've never seen a spark shoot out of a crack in the egg.  If it's shut down, there's not enough air being drawn in to push a spark out......have to have inflow to have outflow.

One thing that does surprise me is the broken fire grate.  With the firebox and fire ring being in perfect shape, and the base being in pretty good shape, I kind of wonder about that.

Looks like another case of spontaneous combustion (yes it's a real thing).  The egg heats up the wood below, and if there a presence of dust/pollen/grease and other gaseous fumes in still air, then the flash point is low.......it doesn't take much for some smoldering to start happening.  Humidity plays a factor too.  The flash point on wood is 300-400F.  With the heat of the egg, and other factors, it doesn't take much to close the gap.

Sorry for the loss--glad everyone is ok.  I don't think this was a certain kamado maker's fault, just really bad luck.  Mother nature creates some conditions some times contusive to fire.
