Anyone in here tried the Vortex BBQ accessory in their BGE?

A friend of mine uses this in his Weber Kettle to do chicken wings and he swears by it. Anyone in this august group tried it?

tell your buddy to go side by side, charcoal one side, wings the other and he'll get similar results.

in the egg we go raised grid to get similar results.

I got the vortex for the purpose of confining charcoal and concentrating heat in the xl and it works very well

Also got the angl l brackets from CGS and those work well for having heat on one side.  @tjv is spot on regaring results with location of fire and food

The vortex has been great for wings and whole chix plus steaks when you want the char sear heat in center and radiating heat on outer ring to finish the cook

But i must admit, any time any gadget that can be used on bge comes out i am in lone to get it....ultimate impulse shopper

Just bought a french fry cutter from wayfair so i guess my impulse shopping extends beyond bge accessories, BUT the way i justified it to momma is that i told her id make fries in large batches on the cgs wok on the bge, sooooo, the french fry cutter is an indirect bge accessory.....just like the fourneau bread baker, sous vide setup, sausage grinder and stuffers, dough proofing boxes, pyrex marinating tubs, kitchen equip shelving, trizor xv knife sharpeners, dutch ovens, smobots, gurus, rotisserie setup for the Large, immersion blenders etc etc.....

Harbor Freight and Restaurant Supply are my two favorite shopping places

I have one I use on my Weber, and it makes amazing wings. The next time I cook wings, I'll try the Vortex in my Egg.

LOL, I have the same problem, I'm a gadget freak too, especially when it comes to the BGE. My neighbor accuses me of remodeling my garage to augment the BGE.

Ah, therein lies the rub with the Vortex / kettle - you can't stuff a whole lot of wings in a kettle. They cook quickly, though (about 30 minutes), have a nice crispy skin, and you can always reload the kettle.

I'll have to see how the Vortex cooks with my XL. I imagine I can get more wings on it in one shot.

    That's a happy looking Egg, Foghorn.  :)

Agreed. A Vortex may be fine if one is just cooking  a few wings but when I do wings I've usually got 30-45 pieces to deal with.

Piney, Let me know how that works on your XL, I'm liking the idea of a Vortex.

Yeah, @SmokingPiney, you could probably use the vortex and a raised grid and only remove about 5-10 wings from the center of my pic and make it work.  That would be over 60.

I did the same sort of thing but with a stainless steel dog food bowl.

My vortex works great in my XL (I bought the larger of the vortex options, cant remember exact size).  The XL is basically the exact same size as my 26" kettle, the egg loses a little diameter to the weber due to the ceramic thickness.

Thank you all for your comments, I think I'll give the Vortex a try. John, would you buy that same size Vortex again? That's the size recommended by Vortex for the XL.

I haven't used it yet, but I picked up a Stainless Coal Ring for the 18.5" WSM that will work in my XL.   I'm going to try reverse sear on some steaks so I have a CIG for a large that will fit on the spider for the sear portion of the cook.  I can have lump confined to smaller area and use my adj rig for indirect part then pull and sear on the CIG just above the coals.

I went and checked their website and it looks like new models have been added since buying mine. Mine was for the 26" kettle. When I get home tonight I can put it in the egg and take some pics. I will try it in my large also but I bet it's too big for the large.
