Broken Egg

Hi-I've had my Large Egg for 14 months (bought new in March 2016). We use it 3-4 times each week. A few days ago while grilling salmon, the inside Bowl cracked and a large chunk fell to the bottom.

Has this happened to any of you? It's concerning since my Egg is still relatively new. This photo was from the next day after it had cooled down.

It's disappointing because I was planning on cooking Mothers Day dinner on it tomorrow but can't now.

So, the green outer shell is still intact?

This is aggravating but the warranty should cover it. Contact your dealer and if that doesn't work png Bruce at the mother ship.

Yes warranty will cover it but for a quick fix so you can still cook on mothers day. Go to hardware store and get some JB weld. This will fix fast and last a long long time.

Just place it back so it'll hold in some fashion and cook. No biggie.

Warranty will cover it.  Just set it back in place and egg on.  If it won't sit, then just pile lump to the other side.  It will work for now, if some lit lump falls through the hole, no worries.  It will not hurt anything.

One of mine is in several pcs right now. I've Ben using it for over a year that way. Too lazy to take it in for warranty. You are good to go as long as you can fit the pieces back together. The JB weld will work too but I'm not 100%  sure if they will hassle you on the warranty if you put JB weld on it. A good dealer won't. They should understand your desire to cook on a holiday

to be clear- I would not cook on it if it falls down like that every time. You are risking cracking the base if you do that. If it's fits back together or JB welds together, you are god to go.

Thanks guys! I already reached out to Bruce, and I'll swing by the place where I bought it and see if they carry a replacement part.

JB weld won't hold on the firebox it gets too hot. I tried it and it didn't last one cool. Like said above if you can get it to sit in place it's fine to drill cook ontill you get a replacement. If you have any large egg dealers nest you they may even have a replacement you can get today. If you are in the Atlanta area Roswell hardware will give you parts if they have them on hand which they always do.

I would check with your dealer right now. If they wont give you one off the shelf, maybe a local egghead can loan you one so you don't miss out on your Mother's Day cook. I've always got a few spare part lying around. Eggheads are usually a generous lot.

That's a tough intro to the forum.  Hopefully a dealer will come thru.  Best of luck.

Don't screw around with jb weld....it's not going to hold and it's going to emit some funky smells.  That stuff stinks as it is, I can't imagine burning it.

You can still cook in it as long as the base is in tact.  Prop that piece back up and go for it.  Even if it falls out, no big deal.  Send pics to your dealer on Monday and get a new one coming, it's warrantied.

I'm guessing because it fell out the first time you'll have a hard time keeping it in place to cook with.  I'd take a decent gage wire and go loosely around the entire firebox to hold it in.  This should let you complete the Mother's Day cook.  It will be covered but you have to get get through this cook.

    Thanks again to everyone!

    1) I talked to the dealer that I bought it from, and he had me email him a picture of the broken part (same pic I posted earlier). He's going to let the BGE rep know and get a replacement part ordered--hopefully as soon as Monday.

    2) We decided to forgo the Mothers Day cook and do it after everything is back in working order.  It's supposed to rain tomorrow anyhow.

I wanted to give a quick update on the broken status of my Egg.  I sent pictures of the broken piece into the dealer who forwarded it to our local rep.  Since it was under warranty, the rep was kind enough to order a new part and have it sent directly to the dealer.  I was able to pick up the part on Friday and was grilling that evening.  Good timing--the weather here just took a turn for the better and we have nothing but sunny days in front of us for the next few weeks.

Thanks to everyone for their advice on this.  Overall I think that 1 week isn't too bad to get a new part delivered and I'm happy with the customer service that BGE provided.

Finally, sorry about the bad first post.  I've been registered on this forum for the last year (ever since I bought my BGE) and I'll try and make some better contributions in the future.  I read on here often for recipes and other tips and appreciate the info you all share.
