IRT warranty when I inquired about a craigslist egg the seller told me he would make the claim if I ever needed one. Neither of us plan on moving so it sounded good. Did not end up making a deal though he wouldn't budge on his asking price.

    Elaborate?
I'm assuming NIB means new in box.  You can register an egg that hasn't been registered with the mothership and they'll honor the warranty.
It has to have been purchased through an authorized dealer though. And the warranty is for the original purchaser.

Craigslist is not an Authorized Dealer, AFAIK. And if someone else purchased it first, and is selling it on Craigslist (even if listed as NIB), then he's not the original owner.

I'm not sure how well they enforce it though, so maybe there are known loopholes.
    From the linked BGE document:

" For Warranty purposes, an original purchaser is the person whose name appears on the purchase receipt, or is in possession of an original purchase receipt, and who has registered their BGE Warranty as required."
About a year ago, I almost bought an egg off someone who won it in a contest (we weren't able to agree on price), but I called the mothership and spoke directly to Bruce who told me that if it was new in the box and I was the first person to register it, the warranty would be good.

  • It had never been registered and seller gave me his purchase receipt.  I registered on line with no problem and received confirmation.

People sometimes will buy an Egg for someone else as a gift. BGE realizes that which is why one is able to buy an Egg for someone, give them the original receipt, and let them register it so the recipient of the gift (the actual owner) gets the warranty.

Or another scenario is like what you described.
