They just opened an Ace a mile from me, I went in there Sunday and they were selling BGE Lump for $29.00. Way too much...
Wow. I can get Rockwood from my Ace for $24.99. Not sure about the BGE Lump price as the only bag I have used was a free one I got when I purchased the egg.
That's what my Ace charges, which is why I buy my RW from Firecraft. No tax either.  Plus I don't have to go to Ace (none conveniently located).
I got mine started back when it was 19.99. Got it for that even after the price hike. I get it for 21-22 bucks a bag now and don't mind supporting my little local ace which is so old he is grandfathered in to use ace hardware name I bet.

Ill spend a little more to have less than half a bag of dust show up.

Not to be cheeky, but http://www.firecraft.com/category/rockwood-charcoal

Free shipping with 5 bags (order 6 - three to a box - minimizes breakage).

Get a bag of Royal Oak from Home Depot to tide you over until they arrive so at least you will get the jokes/comments about Royal Oak in the inevitable lump debate threads.

  • I've got to get a job. After sing RW for my baby back cook today I don't want to use anything else.  It cleaned up quickly and when I had to restart the fire with the meat already on the egg I was expecting some kind of weird smoke taste but that didn't happen.

FWIW, a trick I learned from @Jupiter Jim:

If you notice you are having a hard time getting a clean smoke and it has been awhile, grab a pair of welding gloves and open the dome. Look for the pieces of lump that are in flames. Those will most likely be uncarbonized. Pick them out and get rid of them. Then close the egg and wait to see if your burn starts to clean up.

I've gotten uncarbonized pieces of lump in almost every brand of charcoal I've tried.  Some definitely worse than others though.

Talk to the manager and try  buying in bulk for a lower price. I buy 10 bags of rockwood every 4-6 months from my ace hardware at $19.99 per bag. I don't go through it that fast. Five of those bags go to a fellow egghead. I have saved a lot of money doing that .
That's a very good idea! Worst case scenario they say no

Late to the party but I am all-in with @HofstraJet regarding firecraft for your Rockwood supplier unless the alternative is quite convenient.  I would make the 6th bag the Basques Sugar Maple for a different smoke profile and one you won't find in stores in the lower 48.  FWIW-

I have been using fogo for a little over half a year. Burns clean and lasts. I will say my one gripe is that though I love big chunks, some of these pieces are so large they have their own zip code. But overall pretty nice stuff. I was going to buy some bge lump, as they sell it in the hardware store down the street from the house I just moved to, but may just order more fogo

FOGO does sell several types of lump. One of them does have smaller size chunks, still nice big pieces, but not the real big ones in their other bags.
