Trust the tinkle test.  And Basque is good lump.  Rockwood is what I stockpile.

I'm confused, tinkle good or tinkle bad?  Doesn't that sound mean it's well carbonized, so tinkle is good?  Or if it tinkles like a rainstick, it means small pieces and that's bad.  But that's not necessarily bad, only if you're insecure about the size of your lump.

I'm still a firm advocate of what I call the "tinkle test"! That is when you pick up a bag of lump it should feel solid and when turned over it should have little sound. OTOH if the bag seems hollow at the top and when flipped you can hear a "tinkle tinkle tinkle" sound as the chips and debris shift to the bottom then you don't want that bag!  =)
You should call this test "the rain maker".

I use the visual and 'shake' tests, the bag in first photo look abused!

This applies to the bag of lump as well.

@GATraveller  thank's for the simple explanation.  I never put forth enough effort to dissect the correct way to open the lump bag.  I have cut all four of the threads (each on both ends) and not had success and also hit the right answer (no skill involved for sure) on the first go.  I now have the keys to the kingdom.

I get it right about 1 out of every 4 attempts. Maybe I'll remember next time now that I've watched this.

  • One of our local dealers started carrying parker's out of tennessee. I really like it. At 18 bucks a bag, not bad price either. Anybody tried it?
