It's not near as bad as the other crap but same manufacturer.

Maybe you got a bad batch, but Basques Sugar Maple is good stuff.

I'm still a firm advocate of what I call the "tinkle test"! That is when you pick up a bag of lump it should feel solid and when turned over it should have little sound. OTOH if the bag seems hollow at the top and when flipped you can hear a "tinkle tinkle tinkle" sound as the chips and debris shift to the bottom then you don't want that bag!  =)

  • The green bag is the good stuff.
  • I buy the basques from firecraft all the time. Good neutral lump. On par with Rockwood.

Cowboy or Frontier may be more in line with what you're looking for, FWIW.  Yuge, heavy chunks.  A real man's lump.  Wait, that sounded wrong.
  • I like basques. You got a crappy bag or the dealer didnt handle it very well.

I like Sugar Maple. Have bought many bags. Rockwood is my go-to but I'll buy BGE and Sugar Maple to switch things up once in a while.

As far as Royal Oak being the same as BGE, is that proven or conventional wisdom?

Another who gets a bag with every Firecraft order-nothing but solid performance for me.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.
  • The green bag is great. Never had any issues with it. I've never seen the other one.

Depends on part of the country.  A few charcoal operations feed all the name brands.  Area of the country will result in same supplier, but not guaranteed.

Supposedly (this part I have not seen proof of) higher priced name brands like BGE and Nature Glo get first dibs on batches.

I'd say for most lump you can't blame the brand for the size of the lump. It's the handling.

    From Nakedwhiz...
" It is manufactured by Royal Oak for Big Green Egg. We have heard rumors that Royal Oak saves their best lump for BGE. We have reviewed Royal Oak's own brand and found it to be as good as the BGE lump."

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

  • That stuff is awesome, smokewise. Best aroma ever and burns clean and hot. I do agree the small chips are a pain and can be really bad if you get the wrong bag, which you clearly did. Wish they'd find a way to solve that problem - it'd be my go-to if they did.

I used the word tinkle to be polite. What I mean is if you buy a bag that shifts and makes tinkling sounds then you will be pissed off that you went home with it!

Both of those are some of the best lumps around. Maybe just a bad batch.

Or maybe just a bad bag. Even the best lump out there can have a bad bag now and then.
