  • I'll be cooking on my egg without worry.  Both the stations that would respond to my house have eggs and they cook on them regularly.  They also get regular meals from me for no reason at all; they all know me, I doubt that they'd say anything for fear of getting cut off from the food.

The po po will be busy stuffing his or her face. I doubt you will get a chatum up from them on Thanksgiving. If you have a Propane tank, sit it beside the egg to look like it is fueling your cook. I doubt you will have any problems.

Here's the reason the ban is in place. Chattanooga is in the same boat we are. Be responsible and move to Plan B.

Believe me, I am as big a pyro as the rest of you guys and gals. Heck, I used to fire off the gasser with the lid down just to hear the "swoosh". That being said, I have also witnessed heavy smoke rolling down our street as Pinnacle Mountain burns and listened to the helicopters flying over our house for days on their way to drop water to help put out the fires. It is so dry here, authorities are saying that the fire may burn into March. November is typically very wet here, but not this year. So, if there is a burn ban here, I will not fire up the egg, but that's my decision to obey the ban or not. Each one of us has to make that call, but I, for one, will not be responsible for burning my own house down. If no ban  is in place, egg on because I know I will. Just be careful if you're in an area as dry as we are.

Several years ago this season, here in Aledo, we had a fire caused by the spark of a combine torch 200 acres.  11 departments were called in.  Walls of fire were sideways.  Mostly picked corn and beans, some timber... but scary stuff.

I think what makes this scary, is the fact that folks in that region, don't realize what can happen, until it is too late.  That rainfall deficit map is enough for me.  7 inches since March, uffda.

Is it that important to egg your turkey, instead of putting it in the oven for one year?  What did y'all do pre egg?

Looks like I'll be idling my eggs as well. At least I can refinish my table now.

  • Our city ban does not include charcoal outdoor cookers, but it's discouraged. I may use the max on the driveway while I'm standing there, but definitely no low and slow and especially no over nighters.

I have to believe that those of us who are not experiencing the direct impact of the fires are a bit less sensitive to the burn ban issues. I think that what is important is that we all use good judgment in making the decisions on how we cook our Turkeys and other holiday meals. The fact is there are many peoples houses and lives that are potentially impacted. While I have taken a pro cook approach....I think those impacted should respect the ban and again, use good judgment and common sense. Have a great Thanksgiving all.

  • I had no idea folks in that area were going through this kind of drought. I take back what I said earlier in this post. I would be playing it safe under these conditions. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving regardless of the challenges required to do so.

For the right price I will gladly smoke the turkey for you here in the moist and relatively fire resistant North. Just ship me your turkey and I'll toss it on the egg for a bit and ship it right back.

Residents Reminded of Statewide Burn Ban

    Monday, October 10, 2016

Richland County residents are reminded that the S.C. Forestry Commission has a statewide burning ban in effect until further notice.

The ban prohibits outdoor burning, including yard debris burning and burning for forestry, wildlife or agricultural purposes. Campfires and open-fire cooking are not included in the statewide ban, though Richland County emergency officials recommend no outdoor burning of any kind until the ban is lifted.

The S.C. Forestry Commission declared the ban to help lessen the strain on local fire departments’ abilities to respond to fire emergencies while many of their personnel remain dispatched to coastal regions in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

The statewide burning ban will stay in effect until an official announcement is made by the S.C. Forestry Commission and S.C. Emergency Management Division.

Richland County residents can receive a daily burn ban status by calling the County’s Open Burn Notification line at 803-576-3404.

For statewide burning ban information, visit www.state.sc.us/forest.
