Really?? I always hear how it leaves that gas grill taste.

Untreated propane is darn near neutral. It has no smell and a near zero taste. However you can no longer get untreated propane at the consumer level. All propane sold to the general public is treated with ethyl mercaptans or its equivalent. It's the mercaptans more so than the propane that imparts the slight "gasy" taste.
Mercaptan is added to give it a stinky smell so folks might be warned/able to smell that they are about to blow up (or pass out and suffocate).

The "gas grill taste" was meant as sarcasm. Kinda along the lines of "electric oven taste".

When I was much younger I roasted a marshmallow by repeatedly farting on a Bic lighter. The fellow I unknowingly gave it to said it sort of had a "crappy" taste for lack of a better word. As such, I have since then been convinced that anything that has a smell and is burned will at least impart a minimum amount of flavor to the food. For better or for worse. Granted this is crude test instead of a scientific one, but the a$$ gas did impart some flavor.

i spoke with the ace hardware in blue springs, mo and they told me they have no way to order rock wood. @stlcharcoal
My dealer at Hot Spot Pools and Spa aka KC BBQ Source sells Rockwood.  They always have it stock.  It's not to far from you.  Here is their website.http://www.kcbbqsource.com/   @stlcharcoal knows them well.  worth a drive to the store.  You can buy as many bags as you like.

I hadn't cooked on gas for a long time till this spring when I got my little Coleman portable gas grill and when I cooked steaks on it for the first time my said I taste propane.  I had it on high when I cooked and it did taste like propane.  Now I was using the little green bottles so I I don't know if that is why it tasted that way.  I now cook on medium and use a GrillGrate from my XL to cook on and it is better, but there is a slight taste of gas.  We prefer the Egg of course with the light flavor of the Rockwood.

So many cans of refried beans were involved to provide such a gas fed flame? :)

Since RO lowered the weight of their bags to 15lbs and continue charging 10$, my calculations say that RW is 30cents more per pound then RO, and I've used two bags of RW and know its very good. Got me thinking for the next time I need to stalk up.
RO didn't lower the weight go to Walmart they are still 17.6lbs for $12 something.
The old and the new but still same price. You'll have to zoom
Yes but that's just what Home Depot carries Walmart still had the larger bags for the same price.

I am a Rockwood fan thru and thru. Not quite as prolifient as Scottie, but I've got about 200 pounds burned. Not all bags were massive chunks like his, but were far above average.

I'll admit that I've cheated on Rockwood once or twice with Fogo and another, but Rockwood is my favorite by far. Yes, Fogo does have some massive chunks, but I think it's a little harder to light. Here's one of the recent Fogo meteors that I burned recently for a neighbor who wanted pulled pork for a birthday party.

Saying any lump is king is kinda silly to me. There are many good lumps out there. My first bag of Rockwood sucked but it was a one off so forget it but the next 2 were fine. They weren't $26 a bag fine but they were $20 a bag fine so I may need to give firecraft another shot. For a dollar a pound though there is a list of lumps that are as good as Rockwood Basques makes natures own and sugar maple and I can get the premium fogo 17.6 lb bags locally for just over a dollar a pound.

I have to ask, do you really dislike Rockwood or are you just poking at folks sort of like how I poke at the Yeti boys? I enjoy stirring folks up as much as anyone. However I can't honestly imagine anyone not liking Rockwood. Just thought I would ask.

@SGH to me it was normal $1 a lb lump but it cost me more than that to get it locally. My buddy that has 4 eggs and cooks with me at eggfest that I gave my 2nd bag that I bought to had no clue why I gave it to him. I gave it to him cause I thought he would like it based on the reviews here and he wasn't impressed at all. That's an unbiased review. The bags I picked up at Ace locally for $26 a bag were fine but not 3 times the price I paid for RO fine. At a dollar a pound it's good lump but in GA I can pick up multiple good lumps on my way to work for $1 a pound. If you are in the middle of nowhere and can't get anything but cowboy the $20 bags of Rockwood are great.

And rolling this thread back to @HeavyG 's post -I was gonna mention that the utility companies are required to put a nose sensing agent into the gas for exactly the reason he mentions.  Makes sense from a self-preservation perspective.  In a previous life I have spent several late nights evacuating households because of a gas leak.  At least with wood and related products you can eye-ball the fire .  FWIW-

True.  I know HeavyG was just kidding about the propane smell.  I've never heard anyone, ever, comment on food cooked over propane having an off-flavor due to the infinitesimal amount of (flammable) methyl or ethyl mercaptan in it.

I'm in Des Moines, the ace in west Des Moines has rockwood for 25or 26 per bag - can't speak to the rest of the Midwest

Any Ace in FL can have it in a few days.....there's a Ace RSC (warehouse) in Tampa.  Just have you local store look up SKU#  8400772

Ace has 13 different regions.  We do not have enough charcoal to supply all of them, so we started in the Georgia region and have added a region of their choosing about every 6 months since then.  We're up to 6 regions now.  Ace's in the Midwest can still order from us directly by the pallet (there are about a dozen that do.)  But when their regional warehouse stocks it, they can order by the bag and it shows up on their weekly restock.
