Well, we made the move, and my XL made it without a scratch! If you ever need to move one and can't get original pack out, the UPS store sells 36" double walled boxes that fit it perfectly. Just packed it with some moving blankets underneath & through the dome and base and plenty of cushion around it.

I have had my XL for a little over 2 years and I am on my third fire box, third and last plate setter and send lump grate.  Now that I have the GrillGrates for cooking steaks I don't go much over 500 anymore for cooks.  Not sure if gong to 700 to cook steaks was an issue, but with the GrillGrates I don't have to go as high and less flare ups from the fire before.  I like them for burgers as well.  My dealer did say it is ceramic and at some point it is going to crack.  It is warrantied for life except the plate setter which is 3 years and they said this would probably be my last replacement of it.  I'm going to try and JB Weld one of the broke ones back together at some point.

Or you could get the AR setup from Ceramic Grill store. That's what I want to do if/when my PS cracks.

I will have to wait till my fire box cracks again.  My dealer had an older fire box in stock when I needed a new and it is taller then the newer XL.  The good thing is when I use the plate setter the grate is flush with the felt line.  I have a homemade raised grid that works well for me for now as well.

I just bought an XL and must say this thread is causing me some discomfort.  I understand that they are ceramic, but wow.  At this price point I would not expect this much problem with cracking.  Just took delivery of mine today.

Does anyone know if Kamado/Vision/Primo, etc. have a similar frequency of cracks in their products?

  • Purely anecdotal, but it sure seems like a huge proportions of cracked Eggs appear to be of the XL variety.

Well, according to Primo's very militant website nothing has ever gone wrong on one. And if you post anything otherwise it's locked quite quickly. Quite the place, that site.  :|

@stevez, congrats on the new XL. I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you have a good dealer nearby. Like a said above, I've replaced 2 bases on my XL in 4 years and the warranty process was painless.

Since the last replacement I have avoided getting the egg temp higher than 600. Pizzas are fine at 500 to 600. I also don't do any high temp clean burns.

I have seen way more posts that larges cracked over the years than XLs just a run on XLs recently. My mini base cracked recently so they all can crack.

I would think you would expect to see posts about Larges cracking the most, Purely by virtue of them being the most popular size. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the XLs haven't been around as long, meaning that historically, you will see more posts about Larges.

My MM got away on me during heat up the other day and rose to 700 - higher than I've ever taken it. Even though I wouldn't expect it to crack at these temps, I was a little worried. I never want to hear that dreaded pop!

I have an XL, 2 years running cooking almost every day. My firebox grate exploded when I first got it. Since then, zero issues. Temps from 225 to 1000+F.

I was lighting my egg Sunday night, and found my XL base cracked (AGAIN!). This is the third base that cracked in 4 years.

This is a huge crack starting near the hinge and continuing down the back and across the bottom.

I don't understand what is happening !?!! I wasn't doing anything unusual, the weather was fine, I didn't hear anything, I've never done anything unusual. I never heated this base above 500.

  • If you having base problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but a crack ain't one (yet!).

I've had an XL for 5 or 6 years. Use it maybe 8 times/year. I've had a cracked fire ring, fire box and last week I discovered my cast iron grate is partially cracked. Have not had a problem with my dealer but haven't put in for a new ring or grate yet. I'll check my XL this weekend for cracks. About half of my cooks are pizza, so 600 or higher.

Thanks for this thread. BGE really is tops in customer service. Not easy to make a problem-free item that suffers like Eggs do.
If Canary can do it you can too!

Not any more.  The first one I though over my back fence and it is in many pieces now and now when ever I put in a claim my dealer want's the old one back except for the plate setter.  They even wanted the CI lump grate that cracked.  The new one is a lot thicker and seems better then the original one.   What are you going to do with it if you find it?  Just curious.
