can I get one of these boxes.. Go to my folks house download some movies, tv shows etc and store them on the box? Then take to my place and watch stored movies until I get my satellite connected?

I believe you need an active internet connection for them if you want to watch movies. They stream as opposed to downloading. You could down load onto another iOS decide from Amazon Prime or Hulu the use the Apple TV to show the content from your device in mirror mode.Medium BGE , iGrill2

I bought a new one a couple months ago but haven't hooked it up yet- I do remember buying the one with more storage. Just not sure if it stores movies or just apps, etc.

Look into Plex. It runs server on most OSes. Has clients for about everything. It can stream and sync files very nicely.smak

You are looking for a media server, and the ability to download/record, and we are talking media players. Sorry for going nerd mode.
You are right that you want offline storage, and Apple tv, and plex, Amazon fire stick, and Google tv don't have that.. By default. Plex has extensions that have that, but most of these devices are meant to be online, and stay in one place. (I like Kodi )
No matter what, there is no easy way to store a bunch of content, move locations, and play later. It's pretty labor intensive but can be done. You need to store one by one.
You might look at a TiVo, or a sling box for recording like you would a VCR. Or, go to pirate bay and download a bunch of movies, or do that with Kodi and the TVAddons plugin.
It's a PITA. Sorry.

Buy a Roku4 and then download your movies to a USB flash drive and attach it to the Roku4 and play them using the Roku Media Player app on the TV at your parents house.

I have the newest version and I don't know if you can store anything on it like that. I think you have to have internet to do anything.Dyersburg, TN

I'm pretty sure the storage is just for Apps. They offer it now as the new Apple TV can run more apps/games and such.
I could be wrong, as I've only used it in the streaming fashion.
Favorite way to use it, by the way, is to mirror from my iPhone. If you are watching any videos on your phone, instead of staring at a tiny screen, just select AppleTV from Airplay and BOOM! you are now watching on the big-screen.LBGE/Maryland -

Like AVEngineer mentioned you can download videos to your phone and then play them using Airplay to stream them to the apple TV over wifi.
You could just purchase movies/tv through itunes it will just get expensive because they charge you per episode. Amazon prime is another option and their player will also let you download videos for offline viewing.
One limiting factor will be available storage on your phone. Videos take up a lot of space.

Another vote for Plex. You would need to d/l content from Pirate Bay or YIFI and store on your computers HD or, better yet, an external HD. Plex is the front end that gives you a "Netflix" type feel and interaction to your media. No satellite hook up is necessary, only a decent internet connection. You can also install the app on your phone, iPad, Roku, Apple TV, then access your media collection stored on your HD. Lastly you can convert any movies you have on DVD and store on the same HD so you can watch from anywhere. I use Handbrake on my Mac for this.Charlotte, NC
