I can only speak for Bardstown, KY and the Maker's Mark facility.  We went several years back, got there a little late and the last official tour was ending.  The head distiller gave us a personal tour and let us wax dip our bottles as a gift.

My family has ties to the Old Forrester label; but we don't have much to do with them.

I want to get into some of the barns where the barrels are aged.

It was pretty much countryside and farmland when we were in Bardstown.  Not much to do/eat that we saw.

It's not bourbon, it's Tennessee whiskey but I have toured the Jack Daniels facility in Lynchburg Tennessee twice when we competed there. It was pretty amazing!

We went through the George Dickel Distillery last year after visiting with  @henapple. Very small distillery but a great experience. We had a great time and such friendly folks running the place. Not one computer in the distillery. And it is way back in the holler on a one lane gravel road. Best thing was Whiskey tasting at 10:00 in the morning!!

It is indeed a dry county. But I can assure you that you will be able to sample some Jack. I think they own the entire county and fight to keep it dry.

We did an Evan Williams tour and tasting when we were in Louisville.  It was pretty cool.

With all the bourbon drinkers on here I thought I'd have more responses. Lookjng to maybe do Evan Williams, may have to add Dickels to the list.
Thanks to everyone who did respond.

Buffalo Trace is the best tour. We do frequent trips when friends and family wish to visit. Having done the wine tours of northern California, and anyone having any illusions of it being remotely close to the same type of experience, will be a major disappointment. It is neither as sophisticated for the tour nor populated with major 5 star places to dine.
If I were to recommend, I would start in Frankfort, head south on US127, go west to Bardstown then North back to Louisville. That should get you in to the better distilleries, and use Yelp to find some killer dining experiences.
Be careful on consumption and driving.

Just got back from KY. We were down from the 22nd to the 26th. 10 hr drive from our house to the B&B we stayed at in Lexington.

23rd we went to Keeneland in the morning and watched the horses being worked out. We then toured the stables and got up close to the horses as they were being cooled down and being re-shoed. A lot of money in some of those stables.
Afterward we visited 2 wineries in the area. One of them was pretty good.

24th we headed down to Makers Mark in Lorreto Ky and toured their facility.
After that we headed over to Barton distillery, makers of 1792 bourbon. They also contract bottle for Margaritaville tequila along with several vodkas.
Next was Four Roses distillery. We spent the rest of the afternoon there as we like their bourbon. We even got pulled aside after the complimentary tasting for a private tasting of some of their Reserve single batches.  =)

25th we headed over early to Woodford Reserve, to get a tour in before the crowds as it was a Saturday. We got on the 2nd tour of the day just before the tour buses showed up.
Next up was Buffalo Trace. They have a very nice tour. The guide was very informative and liked to joke around with the guests. The Bourbon cream liqueur they make is really good and when mixed with root beer tastes like a root beer float.
We finished up the day at Wild Turkey.

Since we didn't get to all the distilleries on the official Bourbon Trail, it looks like we have to go back. ;)
Maybe next time we will spend a couple of days in Louisville before heading back over to Lexington.

Woodford Reserve and Makers Mark are two of the best tours I have been on. Willet is a smaller distillery that is fun. Buffalo Trace is good from a historical perspective.

Four Roses is not a great tour but it is a fun visit. They have a variety of single barrels you can only buy there. OBSF is one of my favorites.
