My guess- protect the base ceramics from excessive thermal issues.  Less cycles = longer life in most cases.  FWIW-
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

When I saw that I was thinking maybe if BGE had that they wouldn't have so many issues with bases cracking but who knows.

LOL - seeing that the founder of PRIMO named George was a top employee of Ed Fisher - founder of BGE - when he left to go into competition with his former boss then maybe - just maybe that base plate was one of George's ideas. OTOH according to an old time egger named Char-Woody - C~W for short George was receptive to ideas to improve his PRIMO product that Ed wasn't. Oh well...water under the bridge now isn't?
