Thermometer Uncalibrated

I have bought 3 thermometers over the past few years, and each continue to get uncalibrated quickly, see pictures attached where the grill temp is really 250, but my thermometer isn't even at 0 degrees. Has anyone had these problems and can you recommend a remedy?

As you can see, my digiQ reads 250, but TelTru reads just above 0.

many thanks,
Brandon Woods

I got mine real close using the boiling water method but was only off about 40 degrees to start with. Not too sure that one is any good?

    They are all adjustable.

No need to buy new. Just adjuat the nut on the back after testing in boiling water

sime think the clip (holding the thermo tight to the dome) may be the culprit. If you bump or rotate the thermometer and it is tight to the dome, you could in theory cause the nut to turn and go out of calibration

So try taking the clip off too, after calibrating

Yup...remove that stinking clip, no need....I like to put put my dome thermometer with desired temprature at 12 o'clock so a quick glance from a distance I can tell what's going on

Yup....I will NEVER buy another Smokeware thermometer. Have purchased 2 or 3 of them. One of them I could hold the probe end in one hand, grab the dial in the other and move the pointer with 0 effort. Purchased a second one...checked it in boiling water was spot on. Slid it into the dome. Next cook grate temperature was 235*.....Smokeware read 180*. Pulled it out and back into boiling water, it was off. Back into the Egg....needle was very notch you in its climb...and wouldn't read over 300* now. Grate, according to the ThermoWorks was 375*...Smokeware read 290*. Sent an email, no response....tossed it in the trash...

I have had great luck with the BGE tel-tru dome thermos.  I check the calibration ( boiling water and a thermapen for reference) before every L&S cook.  Never have adjusted as the comparison is within 5*F.  But as above, lose the clip and if you dial it to put the target temp at 12 o'clock, make sure you don't twist the nut.

  • Thank you everyone for the great suggestions.  I will work on this now.  Brandon

@dougcrann not to be stepping on your toes but nobody mentioned Smokeware. It still must have left a bad taste in your mouth, there was a post earlier how they followed up with Smokeware and they were nothing but apologetic about the issue and even sent him some extra goodies. Maybe give them a call and go from there

It has never happened to me, but I removed the thermo clip a long time ago, and I also don't worry too much about temperature accuracy.

Not a good quality product, spend the extra couple of bucks and get the BGE 3 inch thermo…….I've been really pleased with ours.
