Stopped by Kreuz Market and Blacks today. The sausage was better at Kreuz IMO.

  • After yesterday you will be very disappointed in any brisket you get down there. I'm all sausage and ribs when I go to Lockhart. Great places to visit though

I tried one slide slice of brisket at Kruez, it was good but a little dry compared to Franklins. Blacks was a dissapointment except for the peach cobbler.
Tomorrow we are going to City Market.

City market is another cool place but the food is meh. They switched to gas cookers a while back and you can taste it in the food. They cook real fast too so the brisket is tough. I would stick to sausage and ribs there too. They have an interesting mustard based sauce that's pretty good though. You'll need it :)

If you are looking for good cue, there are 3-4 more places in Austin that blow all those away. Salt Lick  is better than all of them and more fun too (the original in Driftwood). It's out in the hill country too which is a nicer drive.

if you are looking to drive a bit and see some of the institutions, by all means, go for it. We will do it every once in a while because it's fun. It's not all about the food.

Never did see what you thought of Franklin, or did I miss it? I've never had better, hope yours was the same. Sorry about all the rain we're having, we certainly needed it though.

Franklins was an amazing experience and by far the best BBQ overall.

It's byob so grab a sixer and a small cooler. Get the family style (all you can eat brisket ribs and sausage). It's a great place to down an afternoon.

  • Save room for cobbler. It might be the best thing there.

Native Austinite here.  Good suggestions in this thread.  I would suggest Stiles Switch BBQ on North Lamar.  Really good bbq and they don't run out in my experience.
Another fan of Stiles Switch. Great BBQ by some real cool folks.

I ordered the Thurmons Choice and my wife had the pulled pork. Met a nice couple from Houston at the Winery and had dinner with them. The food was good but not traditional Texas. Just one warning, do not drop your iPhone on the gravel parking lot. We are at the Apple Store now waiting to get my wife's screen replaced.

  • There you go. Great place to spend a day. Score one for the good guys.

The Apple Store rep highly recommended Valentina's. We may go there for breakfast tomorrow before we return the rental.

Damn John (@cen-texsmoker) i am only 45 miles to the North and you gave several i have not been too. Will fix that soon.
@dstearn one to toss in as you have a week would be Threadgills at 6416 N Lamar. I like the food and this is where Janis Joplin used to sing for beer in the 60's. Very cool Austin place and pic's of Joplin.

A word of caution: You'll be asked if you want the biscuits. Say yes.

However, do not eat them all...you'll never finish your dinner!

The breakfast burrito with brisket was outstanding. The only minus was the location that they moved to was not what I expected based on some of the videos that I viewed.

are they still in the Connoco/Vape Shop/liquor store parking lot? The trailers are in a different configuration than they were when I last visited. Was wondering about that

Still there, I ate there last week.  They flipped the trailer with the smoker to the street side.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER
  • and if you want to speak local it's breakfast taco, not burrito here in the ATX. Not sure why but that's the way we roll. The only place that serves breakfast burritos in Austin is McDonalds.

Austin is such a cool city that I would not bother hunting down BBQ joints until I visited the other sites unless you are going to be in Austin for many days.
We are going to be in Austin for a week so lots of time
Hit up Franklin on a tuesday/wednesday. get there by 8 and you should be fine.

@The Cen-Tex Smoker - is that 8 AM? For lunch? Or are you talking dinner...

they don't do dinner. They are usually sold out by 2 or so. If you get there much after 8 am on a weekend you may net eat.

I've found the weekday lines can be 3-4 hours long and weekends at least 4-5. Last time I got there at 7:30 and ate at 1!
