Melted plastic...

Anyone else get their egg so hot the little plastic pieces (i.e. vent tabs, etc) sustained heat damage? I just finished doing my first pizza tonight and noticed some heat damage. Thought I'd ask if this was normal.

Totally normal at super high temps. Those items are outside the cooking area (hopefully) and need to be properly burned off so as not to cause "plastic burning smell alarm", which is disconcerting, to say the least, when cooking food.

For the bottom vent door "handle"? I think mine split and fell off around the 3rd or 4th cook.Aledo, Texas

I thought you were referring to the vinyl dipped caps on the 'nest' which some folks leave on. I don't know if those are for protection when putting the egg in the nest, or supposed to be a permanent thing.
But the tab on the lower vent was due to sharp edges IIRC. donthe new ones ship with them still?
anyway, preface aside, i'm betting the egg didn't get hot enough to melt it, but rather hot lump probably fell thru the grate near the vent or even against it, and heated it locally.
If it's a problem, i'd file the edges down a bit to take the sharpness back a good bit, or slide it out and dip the tab in the vinyl 'tool handle' stuff.
