I have two, one is fully SS and the other is plastic. I like them both I find the stainless steel one is a little harder to use if the flat part isn't wet, but not having so many pieces and it being an all in one is awesome and takes less room for storage.
Here are the two I have;

I normally check the reviews and ratings on cooksillustrated.com. Here is the top rated pick from last test they did (prior top pick was the Oxy one which I bought back then, I would buy this new top rated one if buying now and this is a lower priced one too). http://www.amazon.com/Swissmar-Borner-V-1001-V-Slicer-Mandoline/dp/B0000632QE/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1462973761&sr=8-20&keywords=mandoline'

I have an earlier model of this one. There are only a few minor changes that are mostly cosmetic. I have been happy with it. Not sure you need to spend a c note on one though. http://www.amazon.com/OXO-SteeL-Chefs-Mandoline-Slicer/dp/B003L0OP1G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1462976736&sr=8-2&keywords=oxo+slicer+mandolinEllijay GA with a Medium & MiniMax

I have a Matfer earlier model 2000, it's excellent, but pricey. Same thoughts as northGAcock though, not sure it's necessary to spend almost $200!

I have the one you reference. It is a good unit. Made of plastic, but made in Germany.

And while you're at it, buy a cut proof glove to wear. Those things are wicked sharp and a few things don't fit well in the holders.A poor widows son.

I agree, very dangerous, I always use the pusher and try to trim first. Usually throw on an OvGlove too.

Agree on wearing cut glove when using these, or slicing anything for that matter with a knife. Too many stories of ER trips for stitches. The plastic v metal issue seems a non-issue. The plastic Oxy one I have has held up fine.
-
From my standpoint, I agree that the cut glove is a must as well. I can't tell you how many sever finger lacerations and partial tip amputations I've seen thru the years from these slicers.
My daughter bought me an el-cheapo one thru a fundraising program at her school. Its works just as fine as the big $$ one that is now riding on a top shelf. The little one will regular slice, wavy cut, and has two additional blades for making hashbrowns (I don't know what the blade cut is called!!!)LBGE #19 from North GA Eggfest, 2014

We have the more deluxe of the plastic oxo ones, maybe $35-40? Thickness is easily adjusted, different blades, yada yada. Works well and I like the hand thing that holds the food. Some aren't so great but this one seems to work well. Red bell pepper seems to stain it a bit if you care about that.Love you bro!

PSA - please be careful no matter which one you buy, don't ask how I know

I wear a glove but don't use the pusher. If you keep your palm - not your fingers - flat on the food and parallel to the cutter, you're good. I have the Mafter, too, but imagine lots of less expensive versions are good. I do like the three sizes for matchsticks.*******Owner of a large and a beloved mini in Philadelphia

I definitely use pusher on Oxy brand. It has plunger with 4 moving spikes on underside that grab food firmly. No way would i use that thing without the food holder/finger saving guard unless it is first few slices off something really big (onion v. pickle)

Then it just tales a thin slice of palm! -

I just use a knife.
The folks at Serious Eats seem to like the Benriner.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

We have the V-1001. We love it.
It does slices, small and medium Julian and also makes short work for small and medium cubes. I wear it out on onions. Not just a slicer.

Bron or any other quality European make...all stainless. Watch your fingers. The plastic ones from Germany or OK but not as versatile.

I throw up a bit in my mouth every time you put that pic up. Don't like the sight of blood unless it's coming from something I intend to eat.Steve

This one has provided me with a decade of flawless service. I put it in the dishwasher after each use too.
