Bluetooth is a close range connection between devices.  Like a wireless headset to your cell phone or your cell phone to your cars stereo.

Wifi is a way to connect to a LAN (Local Area Network) wirelessly and access the resources of that computer network.  Most people use wifi exclusivly to get on the internet.  I don't have an Anova, but would venture to guess that the blue tooth version connects to a cell phone that is close by or a tablet that is close by.  The Wifi version probably lets you connect to the internet, thus allowing control from any computer or "smart device" anywhere.

The Russians, Chinese and North Koreans will be able to hack your wifi Anova and control it to overcook your SRF steaks and turn your chicken into a Petri dish., much less likely with the bluetooth one.
Yes, go bluetooth if you are an "off the grid" or zombie apocalypse prepper type.

If ISIS hacks it before the aforementioned countries do, there is no telling what could become of your meal!

Can you just use a regular metal pot?
Yes the lady in the video had it in a metal pot.
Yes, I agree, but keep in mind to rest what ever pot you use on hot pads or whatever as the container will be as hot as the water you are heating. BTW some people just use their coolers as their vessel.

i was thinking just use the crock pot as the container, would be able to get the water up to temp quicker then shut it down for the anova. nola mentioned making a simple cover floating on top out of bubble wrap

If you don't have any SV yet you are doing yourself a disservice. It's a very useful tool for the money.  Even if you just reheat leftovers with it. It's worth it.
You done it Scott...  I will tell my wife I feel like I'm letting them down with NOT having this unit!

    Come to papa!!!!!!
Make her some of my SV mashed potatoes and she will know it's all worth it!
Well, I will have to do just that because she LOVES mashed potatoes.  Assuming there's a recipe with the app or something?
    @tarheelmatt

Way better IMO than stove top recipes. And saves dishes and stove space along with being perfectly hot when service time comes!!

I start by dicing up my potatoes. I use a mix of russett and red potatoes.  I dice them up and into the bag.

To the potatoes in the bag I pour in about a cup of heavy cream and 2 sticks of butter and a good bit of kosher salt. A lot of times I'll add in flat leaf parsley and some chives. I get this all sealed up as tight as possible and into the water bath at 185 for 4-6 hours.  Usually at this point the bag is all poofed up and I take the potatoes out and start mashing them in a bowl. I will get all the cream and butter incorporated and usually have the potatoes at a half mashed half chunky consistency and put them back in the vag bag and I usually am doing this ahead of time so into the fridge it goes.  This is the key step. Cooking the potatoes in the cream and butter instead of in water.

On service day I put the cold potatoes in the cold SV, turn the SV on to 185 and leave the potatoes for at least an hour or so after it hits 185 to finish tenderizing the potatoes.   Take them out as everyone sits down and whip them in a bowl and serve!

i wouldnt do that.  just fill it with hot tap water and that will put you way ahead of the game.  i use a 12qt rubbermaid container filled with about 8-9 qts every time and i just fill it with hot tap water and its usually up to set temp in just a few minutes.  i did some steaks at 130 sunday and iirc my tap water got me up to 90ish

Broke the news that the wife will be getting a Sous Vide for mothers day. Guess it's better than the vacuum cleaner from Christmas.

She recorded your miserable plea! "but Dear! It's an ORECK and the cleaning crew at work swear by them!!!" followed by the sounds of SLAM as the bedroom door shut and CLICK as the lock sealed your fate that night!

I got my wife a vacuum cleaner for Mother's Day one year. I did hide a diamond necklace in the box. I watched very carefully as she opened it to make sure it didn't get lost in her overjoyed state of opening a new vacuum.

There was a slam and a click, but it wasn't a door.  It was a clip and a slide on a 45.
