It was a nice evening to go to Urgent Care...

Have you ever been standing there lighting your lump with a Looftlighter, hot air gun, weed burner, etc., and thought to yourself; "Gee I wonder what it would feel like if one of these burning embers that are flying around landed in my eye?" Can you say "Corneal Abrasion" kids? I thought I could get away with just having my regular glasses on, time to switch lighting styles or use safety glasses. Luckily it's not too bad, all I have is a follow up with Opthamology tomorrow.

Will take another run at that spatchcock chicken tomorrow night...

Every now and again I like to let my inner idiot out for a walk, Doh!!

Next time just set up outside the urgent care.......that way you can get right back to it. Maybe find someone with a good eye and hands to tend it while you get your pirates patch. Spatch on my Carolina neighbor. That same idiot lives here also.

Ugh!  Sorry to hear that, glad it's not serious and thanks for the feedback.

I don't use a LL, but I have dumped in my chimney an had a big poof of sparks come up on occasion.  When they fly out and land on your foot...they don't tickle, but it beats a stick in the eye!

Cool.....did they give you an eye patch so you can look like a pirate?

Glad it wasn't a lot worse. Best of luck with the ophthalmologist.

Hope it resolves quickly, I use a Looftlighter and wear safety glasses.  Much lesser issue, but you can ruin a good shirt wearing while you are lighting.

Nope, no eye patch.  Just a small divot that needs to get checked out tomorrow. Appreciate the comments everyone. I gotta say, it was a bit scarey there for a couple minutes after it happened.

Yep I wear my ANSI/OSHA approved sunglasses which are what I wear daily at work. I have the sunglasses and clear lense pair. I've had lump spark many times and they've saved my eyes for sure. I'm glad you're okay too. "Safety is no accident"

Really scary. I had gas spray in my eyes once.....anything that compromises your vision will make you panic there for a second or two. Let us know what the doc says.

I've got a patient from a few years back who lost an eye in a shooting competition; had a ricochet fragment catch him.  He wears a pirate patch.  To make it worse, he was a shooting instructor for the Marine Corps back in his pre-pirate days.

As a joke, he brought us all patches one day and we all wore them every time he came in for appointments.  We had some fun together.

I've scratched my cornea once before right out of college; though I was a goner for sure!  Best wishes and a speedy recovery!

I got a piece of metal in my eye from grinding. Waited too long to go to doctor, wound up with a rust ring in my eye. Had to wear a patch for 3 days. Was not fun, first day I was starting to get claustrophobic, had to have Doc give me something to calm down. Glad your ok!!

    Eye injury stories!

first, that sucks, glad it wasn't more serious.

me?  I tried to catch a fencing staple with my eye about 25 years ago, putting up some welded wire fencing.  Thankfully I was unsucessful and it just skidded across and left me with a lacerated cornea.  Eyepatch for a week, took some getting used to - keeping the other eye open is the challenge, that and eating sushi with chopsticks when you're drunk and lost your depth perception, all good now.

    hope you heal quickly.
    Love you bro!

Got tired of holes in shirts, now it is paper towel and vegetable oil .
  • Holy crap man. Scary stuff. I've been very close several times. I switched to the oiled up paper towel a while back and it does work best for me. It's pennies per light and gets the lump lit quick and clean. I talked to Jonathan at Rockwood a few months ago and he said that putting a 1000 degree torch on a few inch spot of lump is a horrible idea (he was more eloquent than that).
